INTRODUCTION
• This will explain how businesses use cradle to grave analysis to improve
products and better serve their customers.
• What is the first thing that you think about when you hear the term
cradle to grave?
• The cradle is where you start life, and, of course, the grave is where you
end it. In business, the term cradle to grave is used in reference to a
firm's perspective on the environmental impact created by their
products or activities from the beginning of its life cycle to its end or
disposal.
• It is a method assess the potential environmental impact of a product
or services throughout the entire lifecycle.
Cradle to Grave Analysis
• The cradle to grave perspective on a firm's environmental impact

acknowledges that a certain amount of waste is the cost of doing
business.
• Firms seek to lessen waste as much as possible.
• Toward this end, firms conduct cradle to grave analysis, also known as a
life cycle assessment, to understand their environmental impact.
• A cradle to grave analysis does three things: collects, evaluates, and

interprets data associated with the environmental impact of a firm.
Cradle to Grave Analysis
There are few steps in conducting a cradle to grave analysis:
• Step 1: Define the objective of the analysis

• step 2: Define the scope of the analysis
• Step 3: Collect background Data
• Step 4: Collect Data by conducting interviews, through observation and
what a combination of two.

• Procurement is the act of obtaining goods or services , typically for
good business purposes. Procurement is most commonly associated
with businesses because companies needs to solicit services or
purchase goods, usually on a relatively large scale.

• Cradle to gave approach is an instrument with
which environmental effects of a product during its
life cycle can be integrally assessed.
• Integral means that all the processes in the supply

chain that contribute to the overall environmental
burden are incorporated in the assessment; from
use of raw material to the use, re-use and disposal
of product
• The cradle to grave perspective on a firm's
environmental impact acknowledges that a
certain amount of waste is the cost of doing
business.
• Firms seek to lessen waste and reduce cost as
much as possible. Toward this end, firms
conduct cradle to grave analysis.
• One problem consultants often see within a
supply chain is the tendency for companies to
compartmentalized their processes within each
department.
• For example: the packaging department decides
to shave a few cents off of the cost of shipping
the products by using less durable packaging.
When these departments are isolated from one
another, this department may never realize that
the cheaper packaging is saving a few cents per
item, yet costing the company many dollars in
higher rates of damaged products that have to
be dealt with and replaced.
• So it is advised to take the “cradle to
grave” approach, and open
communications among departments.
• When different pieces of the organization
come together, it’s possible to identify
areas such as this where improvements
can be made, costs can be lowered, and
the end product can be made superior.
