    Infrared radiation (IRR) is electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths between 770 nm and 1 mm. IRR is divided into 3 bands - IR-A from 770-1400 nm, IR-B from 1400-3000 nm, and IR-C from 3000-1 mm. The thermal effect of IRR on tissue is proportional to the power and wavelength of radiation, distance from the source, and angle of incidence. Human skin allows maximum penetration of IRR with a wavelength of 1200 nm. IRR is applied perpendicularly from 45-60 cm away from the source. Advantages include non-contact treatment and ability to observe the area, while disadvantages include difficulty localizing treatment and ensuring consistent heating.

    distance between radiation source and the
    tissue, angle of incidence and absorption
