is a succession of many closely spaced
mountains covering a particular portion
of earth.
It may consist of valleys and river
channels formed by water rushing down
from melting glaciers.
Earth is a home for many
mountain ranges. Here are
some of the most famous
ranges in the world.
Himalayas
Highest Mountain
Range in the World
Himalayan range
 Is the highest mountain system and also the youngest in
the world.
 Its origin dates back to the Jurassic Era, which is about
80 million years ago.
 The name “Himalaya” comes from the Sanskrit
language and means the “House of Snow”, or the
“Snowy Range”.
 With an elevation about 1,000 ft (305 m) above sea
level
 Mt. Everest is the highest peak with 29,029 ft (8,848
m)
ANDES
Longest Mountain
Range in the World
ANDES
 is the longest mountain chain in the world with the
distance of 4,500 miles from South America to
Panama.
 3 sections: Central Andes( Chilean and Peruvian
Mountain), Southern Andes(Argentina to Chile),
Northern Andes(Columbia, Ecuador and Venezuela)
 a Mesozoic-Tertiary orogenic belt of mountain
along pacific ring of fire.
 Due to subduction of Nazca and Antartic plate.
 Aconcagua in Argentina is the highest peak with
22,838 feet (6,961 m)

The Appalachians
 formed during the Ordovician period,
approximately 480 millions year ago.
 It stretch southwestward for about 1,500 miles
from Quebec in Canada to central Alabama.
 Mount Mitchell in Northern Carolina is the
highest peak of the applachians.

System in Europe
The Alps
 were part of the orogenesis caused by the collision
between the Eurasian and African plates that date
back to the late Cretaceous period about 300
million years ago.
 it extend from the southeastern France and
northern Italy, Switzerland, Souther Germany and
portion of Austria and Yugoslavia.
 Mont Blanc in France is the peak with 15,782 feet

 the range rose during the Carboniferous period,
approximately 300 million years ago, when
Australia collided with parts of South America and
New Zealand.
 Mount Kosciuszko is the highest peak with 7,310
ft (2, 280 m)
 it stretch more than 3,500 k from Dauan island of
Queensland, running through coastline of South
whales, to Victoria.
