FABRIC WASTE
KRITTIKA KHANWALKAR
The shift towards mass manufacturing of cheap clothing is resulting in pollution, more
waste and harming environment. The majority of textile waste heads to our landfills
where they release greenhouse gases.
WHAT
SOCIETY
oConsumers in UK have an estimated
of $46.7 billion worth of unworn
clothes in their closet
oBusy lifestyles make many people
time-poor than previous generations
with loss of sewing and mending
skills (theconversation.com)
oThere is a rapid change of
preferences
ECONOMY
oThe global apparel market is valued at 3 trillion dollars and accounts for 2% of world’s GDP
(fashionunited.com)
ENVIRONMENT
oNPR Reports, from the Environmental Protection Agency,
that 15.1 million tons of textile waste was generated in
2013, of which 12.8 million tons were discarded
oNew York generates 200 000 tons of textile waste which
equates to 6% of city’s total waste
oDumpsites are taking most of the forest areas

Daily in Hong Kong, there are 253 tons of

textiles sent to landfill
WHY
SOCIETY
oWardrobes in developed nations are saturated, so in order to sell more products , retailers
tempt shoppers with constant newness and convince them the items they already have are no
longer fashionable
oFast fashion retailers like H&M, Zara ,Forever 21 flood clothing markets with quick turn around
trends and cheap threads
oCheaper clothes have a short lifespan
ECONOMY
oFast growing e-commerce sector
oNo tangible business model
oLack of collection infrastructure,
sorting and processing system at scale
and economically viable recycling
models
oRecycling is not scalable and profitable
ENVIRONMENT
oSynthetic fibres, which make up atleast 60% of our clothes, are non-biodegradable
oThe large luxury brands such as Chanel, Louis Vuitton burn their extra textiles
oThere is no proper segregation of waste
oAs waste decomposes, its releases methane
HOW
SOCIETY
oIllegal dumpsites serve as magnets for other criminal activities
oWaste creates unhealthy environment and hence gives rise to several diseases
ECONOMY
oThe rise of supermarkets/brands with discount offers boosts up economy
oThe dirt and smell makes areas unsighty which impacts on tourism
oTransportation costs on garbage transport to the dump sites are huge
oLots of money needs to be spent fixing natural areas and infrastructure affected by illegal
dumping
ENVIRONMENT
oAccording to UN climate change- fashion industry contributes
10% global greenhouse gas emissions
oTime taken to decompose:
•Cotton glove:3 months
•Wool:1 to 5 years
•Nylon:30 to 40 years
oClogged landfills , groundwater contamination
oDeath of wildlife after consuming poisonous materials

A service of accepting bags(brown/black)

Proprietary(brown) means the Non-proprietary fabrics

fabric has some kind of marking could be reused again by

According to Fabscrap’s annual report

from 2018, they saved nearly 1,719
tons of CO2 emissions and planted an
equivalent of 40,395 trees
WTE INCINERATORS
oIn absence of effective recycling properties, the prevailing approach is to send used clothes to
WTE incinerators. Once cut and shredded, the small pieces of textile waste serves a purpose of
compensating the wet solid waste collected at household levels and curbside, increasing the
burning efficiency.
oWTE incineration facilities are considered renewable power generators.
oThe Chinese government expects the capacity to double between 2015-2020
