Concrete Contain Polymer

Introduction
(1) Polymer concrete (PC): Use polymer as binder to bind the
aggregate (No cement)
(2) Latex-modified concrete (LMC): Polymer-modified concrete.
NC with replacing some mixing water by latex
(3) Polymer-impregnate concrete (PIC): Impregnate or infiltrate
hardened concrete pores with polymer (latex)
High cost
Polymer Concrete (PC)
Polymer concrete (PC) = mixture of aggregate with polymer as binder
Minimum binder  Low cost  maximum dry density of aggregate
Use dry aggregate  Moisture cause damage in polymer concrete

Maximum Density  Minimum Voids 20 – 25% filled with

 1:1 mixture of polymer and sand

Set and harden in Few Hours

Polymer Concrete (PC)
Properties of Polymer Concrete depend on
 Amount of polymer
 Properties of polymer
Good chemical resistance
High initial strength
High modulus of elasticity
Used in overlays and repair of damaged concrete
Polymer Concrete (PC)
Not used for structures because of
 Thermal and creep Problems

Viscoelastic behavior 
 Load > 50% of u  Failure
 Load < 50% of u  No failure
Polymer Concrete (PC)
Methyl Meth-Acrylate
(MMA)

Butyl Acrylate (5% % 20%)

Latex Modified Concrete (LMC)
Normal Concrete  Latex added as admixture from water
 Latex used as 10 to 25% by wt of cement
Latex = Polymer suspended in water
Latex contain 50 wt% polymer (spherical particles 0.01 to 1 μm diameter)
 suspended in water by surface-active agents (reduce surface tension)
Surface-active agents increase entrained air in concrete
Latex Modified Concrete (LMC)
Used as overlay of concrete surface
Increase workability of concrete
High cost
w/c ratio range 0.4 – 0.45
Cement content 390 – 420 kg/m3
Hardening of latex by Drying (loss) of water
Use dry curing  water in latex hydrates with cement
Latex Modified Concrete (LMC)
Good bond with old concrete
Resist entry of water and aggressive solutions (Chloride, sulfur, acid)
Used for repair of damaged floor, pavement, and bridge deck
 Overlays in industrial floors
Polymer Impregnated Concrete (PIC)
Hardened concrete contain pores and micro-crack
Filling concrete pores with polymer
Concrete should dry and evacuate
Polymer with low viscosity used
Use MMA and Styrene polymers
Hardening at 70 – 90 C (Steam, heat)
Often PIC used as precast elements in factory
Polymer Impregnated Concrete (PIC)
Element Thickness < 15 cm to fully penetrate
(1) Casting concrete elements
(2) Normal curing for 7 or 28 days
(3) Drying at 20 C 14 days
 100 C 7 days
 150 C 3 days
(4) Soak in polymer 1 Hr Evacuation
12 Hr No Evacuation
Polymer Impregnated Concrete (PIC)
In situ Ponding for slab or floor
Precast elements Immerse in polymer
 (5) Polymer set 70 – 80 C 5 Hr
 20 C 12 Hr
Polymer Impregnated Concrete (PIC)
Excellent Durability to
Frost action, Abrasion, Chemical attack (Sulfate, corrosion)
No water to freeze
