The key takeaways are that atrial fibrillation is an irregular heartbeat that can increase the risk of stroke and heart failure. It occurs when the heart's upper chambers beat rapidly and irregularly due to abnormal electrical signals.

Some causes of atrial fibrillation include high blood pressure, heart disease, aging, and sometimes the cause is unknown.

Common symptoms of atrial fibrillation include palpitations, shortness of breath, weakness, chest pain, dizziness, fatigue, and confusion.

ATRIAL FIBRILLATION

Presented by
Shehzadi
OVERVIEW
• Atrial fibrillation or AF is the most
common type of arrhythmia
• An arrhythmia is a problem with
the rate or rhythm of the heatbeat
• During an arrhythmia the heart can
beat too fast too slow or with an
irregular rhythm
OVERVIEW
• AF occurs if rapid ,disorganized electrical
signals cause the hearts two upper chambers
–called the atria- to fibrillate

• The term fibrillate means to contract very fast

and irregularly
CAUSES
• AF occurs if the electrical signals don’t travel
in a normal way
• damage is most often the result of other
conditions of the heart
• Such as high blood pressure
• Heart disease
• Risk of AF increases as u age
• Sometimes cause of AF is unknown
SYMPTOMS

• AF usually causes the hearts lower chambers ,

the ventricles, to contract faster than normal.
• When this happens the ventricles cant
completely fill with blood .
• Thus they may not be able to pump enough
blood to the lungs and body
• This can lead to sign and symptoms such as :
SYMPTOMS
• Palpitations (feelings that your heart is
skipping a beat )
• Shortness of breath
• Weakness or problems exercising
• Chest pain
• Dizziness or fainting
• Fatigue
• Confusion
AF COMPLICATIONS
• It has two major complications
1 . STROKE
during AF the hearts upper chambers don’t
pump all of their blood to the ventricles . Some
blood pool in the atria . When this happens a
blood clot (thrombus ) can form
If the clot breaks off and travels to the brain it
can cause a stroke (embolus)
2 . HEART FAILURE
heart failure occurs if the heart cant pump
enough blood to meet the bodys needs
AF can lead to HF because the ventricls are
beating very fast and cant completely fill with
blood
Thus they may not be able to pump enough
blood to the lungs and body
• Fatigue and SOB are common symptoms of HF
. A buildup of fluid in the lungs causes
these symptoms . Fluid also can build up
in the feet ankles and legs causing weight
gain
DIAGNOSIS
• Medical and family histories
• Physical exam
• Tests and procedures

• Sometimes AF does not cause signs or

symptoms .thus may be found during physical
exam or EKG test done for another purpose
TREATMENT
• Lifestyle changes
• Medicines
• Procedures or surgery (rarely a mechanical
heart pump or heart transplant) are the main
treatments for HF
GOALS OF TRETMENT
• Rate control
controllling how many times a min the
ventricles contract
giving ventricles enough time to completely
fill with blood
with this , the abnormal heart rhythm
continues but you have fewer symptoms and
feel better
GOALS OF TRETMENT
• Rhyhtm control
restoring a normal heart rhythm . It allows
atria and ventricles to work together to
efficiently pump blood to the body
GOALS OF TRETMENT
• Limiting or avoiding alcohol caffeine or other
stimulants that may increase heart rate
