Drainage of Roads
Topics
1. Introduction
2. Road drainage
3. Sub-surface drainage
2. Introduction
• Drainage of roads is a system by which efficient
collection, removal and disposal of surface.
• The entrance of water in the sub-grade of the road
pavement can be prevented by road drainage system
i. Importance of highway
ii. Ideal requirement of highway drainage system
i. Importance of highway
• Excess moisture in soil sub-grade causes considerable
lowering of its stability.
• Increase in moisture causes reduction in strength of many
pavements material like WBM
• In some clayey soils variation in moisture can cause
considerable variation in volume of subgrade.
• One of the most important cause of failure by the formation
of waves & corrugations in flexible pavement is due to poor
drainage.
• Excess water on shoulders and pavement edge causes
considerable damage.
ii. Ideal requirement of highway drainage
system
• The surface water from the carriageway and shoulder should
effectively be drained off without allowing it to percolate to
subgrade.
• The surface water from the adjoining land should be
prevented from entering the roadway.
• The side drain should have sufficient capacity and longitudinal
slope to carry away all the surface water collected.
• Flow of surface water across the road and shoulders along and
the slope should not causes formation of cross ruts.
• Seepage and other sources of underground water should be
drained off by the sub-surface drainage system
2. Road drainage
 a system by which efficient collection , removal and
disposal of surface and sub-surface water can be
properly done
 The main Aim is to keep the road surface and its
foundation as dry as possible from water.
 A good drainage system is required to maintain the
highway transportation with minimum cost.
 Types of drainage
i. Surface drainage.
ii. Sub Surface drainage.
i.) Surface drainage.
• When a system in which the surface water of road
is collected and disposed within right-of-way of a
road.

FUNCTION
• To collect the drained off water from road surface.
• To keep the road surface from water.
• To increase the stability of road pavement.
ii.) Sub-surface Drainage
• When the system by which sub-soil water from underside of
a road pavement is collected and removed.
• Its specially used to control the moisture content of the road
sub-grade.
FUNCTION
• To control the moisture content of the road sub-grade.
• To maintain the bearing capacity of the sub-grade soil.
• To reduce the capillary rise.

L-drains and C-drains

a) L-drains & C-drains
• Water table can be lowered by providing longitudinal drains
and cross drains below the pavement structure at the
specified depth
• Longitudinal drains pipes are placed with open joints butting
against each other and laid on a bed of sand, crushed stone
of 150mm thick.
Causes of providing the L & C-Drains.
i. The main longitudinal drain pipes may be provided on the
both sides.
ii. The main longitudinal drain pipes may be provided at the
center sufficiently below the road pavement.
