Numerical Methods in Nuclear Engineering

This document discusses several numerical methods used in nuclear engineering. It describes the fundamental neutron transport equation that models neutron behavior and the neutron spectrum. It explains how the Monte Carlo method is used to simulate particle systems and model nuclear weapons. It also discusses lattice calculations that are performed to model small regions and the overall core in 2D and 3D. The conclusion reiterates that these models help predict energy distribution in reactors.

Numerical Methods in Nuclear
Engineering
In nuclear reactors the neutron distribution is of primary importance for the
power distribution and thermal analysis and fuel burnup.
This distribution is intimately coupled with the thermal hydraulics of the
systems due to inherent feedbacks.
This gives rise to challenging problems in the analysis of reactor systems,
especially under accident conditions where rapid excursions may take place.
Fundamental Neutron Transport
Equation
The collective behaviour of neutrons in a reactor core is described by the neutron
transport equation which is also referred to as the Boltzmann equation.

This equation represents the balance between gain and loss in the unit volume of
neutrons that are characterized by a specific kinetic energy E (velocity υ) and are
traveling in a specific direction Ω at a time t and a position r.
Neutron Spectrum
The function characterizing the energy dependence of neutron flux is called the
neutron spectrum and it varies with fuel enrichment, moderator density, void
fraction, burnup, and so on.

Monte Carlo method
Monte Carlo simulation is a computerized mathematical technique that allows to
account for risk in quantitative analysis and decision making.
Monte Carlo simulation provides with a range of possible outcomes and the
probabilities they will occur for any choice of action.
It shows the extreme possibilities—the outcomes of going for broke and for the
most conservative decision—along with all possible consequences for middle-of-
the-road decisions.
Monte Carlo method
Monte Carlo simulation performs risk analysis by building models of possible
results by substituting a range of values - a probability distribution - for any
factor that has inherent uncertainty.
It then calculates results over and over, each time using a different set of random
values from the probability functions.
Monte Carlo simulation produces distributions of possible outcome values.
In Nuclear Engineering it is usually used in modelling an impact of nuclear
weapons and modelling particle systems.
Lattice Calculation
Even using a high performance computer, a direct core calculation with several
tens of thousands of fuel pins is not easy to obtain enough accuracy using Monte
Carlo method for a local calculation or small reactivity because of accompanying
statistical errors.
Instead, the nuclear design calculation is performed using lattice calculation in a
two-dimensional (2D) infinite arrangement of fuel rods or assemblies and core
calculation in a three-dimensional (3D) whole core.
Conclusion
The are a lot of Numerical Methods used in Nuclear Engineering. A few of them
are Monte Carlo method, Fundamental Neutron Transport Equation, Lattice
Calculation and Neutron Spectrum.
These models help to predict and calculate with fair accuracy energy distribution
within the atomic reactors.
