the exit, and (3) the way of exit discharge.
 It comprises the vertical and horizontal ways of
travel and shall include intervening room spaces,
doorways, hallways, corridors, passageways,
balconies, ramps, stairs, enclosures, lobbies,
escalators, horizontal exits, courts and yards.
SECTION 10.2.5.1
APPLICATION
It contains general fundamental requirements
essential to providing a safe means of egress from
fire and like emergencies
 nothing shall be constructed to prohibit a better
type of building construction, more exits, or
otherwise safer conditions than the minimum
requirement.
Any change, alteration or addition that would
reduce the means of egress below the requirements
for new buildings is prohibited.
SECTION 10.2.5.2
GENERAL PROVISIONS
 Exit is required to be protected by separation
from other parts of the building.
 It also include the occupant load, measurement
of means of egress, minimum width, number of
means of egress, arrangement of exits, dead-
end limits, access to exits, capacity of means of
egress, and changes in elevation.
 Headroom shall be so designed and maintained
as to provide adequate headroom
 Capacity Factor

SECTION 10.2.5.3
DOORS
 Every door and every principal entrance
which are required to serve as an exit shall be
designed and constructed that the way of
exit is obvious and direct.
 The door assembly required by this section
shall comply with the fire protection rating.
 Doors should be side-hinged or pivoted-
swinging type. It should swing through the
direction of egress travel when used in an exit
enclosure.
SECTION 10.2.5.4
STAIRS
 All stairways designated as a means of egress shall
be continuous from the uppermost floor level down
to the ground floor.
 Dimensional Criteria for new stairs

FEATURE DIMENSION
Minimum Width See table of new stair width
Maximum height of risers 180mm
Minimum height of risers 100mm
Minimum tread depth 280mm
Minimum headroom 2,000mm
Maximum height between landings 3,660mm

obstructions, except projections not
more than 114mm at or below
handrail height on each side
Maximum height of risers 205mm

Minimum tread depth 230mm

Minimum headroom 2,000mm
Maximum height between landings 3,660mm
 New stairs width
Total Cumulative Occupant Load Width
Assigned to the Stair

<2,000 persons 1,120mm

≥2,000 persons 1,420mm

 Curved stairs depth tread is not less than

280mm at a point 305mm from the narrowest
end of the tread.
 Stair details shall be permanent fixed
construction.
SECTION 10.2.5.5
OUTSIDE STAIRS
 Stairs and other exits shall be so arranged as
to clear the direction of egress to the street.
 Any permanently installed stair outside of the
building being served is acceptable as a
means of egress under the same condition.
 Enclosure of inside stairways is required,
outside stairs shall be separated from the
interior of the buildings with walls having the
same fire-resistance rating.
SECTION 10.2.5.6
HORIZONTAL EXITS
 Is a way of passage from one building to an
area of refuge in another building on
approximately the same level.
 It may be substituted for other exits to an
extent that the total exit capacity of the other
exits(stairs, ramps, doors leading outside the
building) will not be reduced below half that
required for the entire area.
SECTION 10.2.5.7
RAMPS
 A ramp shall be permitted as component in a means
of egress when it conforms to the general
requirement of Section 10.2.5.2 of the RIRR.
 Dimensional Criteria for New Ramps
Feature Dimensions

Minimum width clear of all obstructions, 1,120mm

except projections not more than 114mm
at or below handrail height on each side

SECTION 10.2.5.8
EXIT PASSAGEWAYS
 Every building or structure, new or old, designed
for human occupancy shall be provided exits.
 Any hallway, corridor, passage or tunnel, may be

adequate to accommodate the aggregate
capacity of all exits discharging through it.
 The floor should be solid and without
perforations.
SECTION 10.2.5.9
ESCALATORS AND MOVING WALKS

 Escalators and moving walks shall not

constitute as part of the required means of
egress, unless they are previously approved
existing escalators and moving walks.
SECTION 10.2.5.10
FIRE ESCAPE STAIRS, LADDER, AND SLIDE ESCAPES

 It should be safe path of travel to the ground

or other area of refuge to which they lead.
 Fire escape may be used in single and two-
family dwellings and residential apartments
of not more than 3 storey.
 Slide escape shall be rated at one exit unit per
slide, with rated travel capacity of sixty
persons per minute.
SECTION 10.2.5.11
ILLUMINATION OF MEANS OF EGRESS

 Every building or structure equipped for

artificial illumination, adequate and reliable
illumination shall be provided for all exit
facilities.
 The floors of means of egress shall be
illuminated at all points including angles and
intersections of corridors and passageways,
landings of stairs, and exit doors.
