It is desired to achieve the same separation with a continuous feed of 1250 lb-moles/h.
Scale the flowchart accordingly.
QUESTION 6
100 kg of an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide contains 20% NaOH by mass. It is
desired to produce an 8% NaOH solution by diluting a stream of the 20% solution with a
stream of pure water.
a) Calculate the ratios (kg H2O /feed solution) and (kg product solution/ kg feed solution)
b) Determine the feed rates of 20% solution and diluting water needed to produce 2310
lbm/min of the 8% solution.
* Change the unit from gram (g) to kg – for the answer
QUESTION 7
• Corn-steep liquor contains 2.5 % invert sugars and 50 %
water, the rest can be considered solids. Beet molasses
contains 50 % sucrose, 1 % invert sugars and 18 % water,
the remainder is solids. A mixing tank contains 125 kg corn-
steep liquor and 45 kg molasses, water is then added to
produce a diluted sugar mixture containing 2 % (w/w)
invert sugars.
a) Sketch and label a flowsheet for the batch mixing process.
b) Determine the amount of water required for the process.
c) Calculate the concentration of sucrose in the final mixture.
QUESTION 8
Fermentation slurry containing Streptomyces kanamyceticus cells is
filtered using continuous rotary vacuum filter. Feed rate for the slurry is
120 kg h-1; 1 kg slurry contains 60 g cell solids. To improve the filtration
rates, particle of diatomaceous earth filter aid are added at a rate of 10 kg
h-1. The concentration of kanamycin in the slurry is 0.05% by weight.
Liquid filtrate is collected at a rate of 112 kg h-1; the concentration of
kanamycin in the filtrate is 0.045% (w/w). Filter cake containing cells and
filter aid is removed continuously from the filter cloth.
• Draw and label the flow diagram for this process.
• Calculate the percentage of water in the filter cake.
• Calculate the mass of kanamycin (kg) absorbed by the filter aid if the
concentration of kanamycin dissolved in the liquid in the filter cake is
the same as in the filtrate.
