Project Resource Management

This document discusses project resource management. It defines resources as physical or virtual entities needed to complete project activities. There are different types of resources including natural, human, tangible, and intangible. Key aspects of resource management are planning, structuring resources, allocating resources to activities, leveling resource usage over time, and visualizing resource usage with histograms. PROJECT

RESOURCE
MANAGEMENT
What is Resource?
• Is any physical or virtual entity of
limited availability that needs to be
consumed to obtain a benefit from it.

• It is important to carry out the

project.

• It may be restorable or non-restorable.

Types of Resources
• Natural Resources
(derived from environment)
• Human Resources
(the skills, energies, talents, abilities and
knowledge that are used for the production of
goods or the rendering of services)
• Tangible/Intangible Resources
(Tangible resources are conventional resources
like equipment, vehicles, whereas intangible
resources are things like corporate image,
brands and patents.)
Resources ( in a project)
It includes:
• financial resources(fundings)

• Tools and equipments

• human skills(labor)

• People
Resource Management
• resource management is the efficient
and effective deployment of a resources
needed in a project.

• Resource management is a key element

to activity resource estimating and
project human resource management.
Resource Planning
• Resource planning is the process of making
sure resources are available as required to
execute the project according to schedule
• Questions to ask:
– What type of resource is required?
– How much resource is required?
– When and how long is the resource
needed?
– Where is the resource required?
Key Elements of
Resource Management
• Resource Plan
• Resource Breakdown Structure
• Responsibility Assignment matrix
• Resource Allocation
• Resource Leveling
• Resource Histogram
Resource Plan
• Every project plan should have a resource plan as
its component. The resource plan should contain
all aspects of your project from beginning to end
that pertain to resources required.
• Will be able to identify the quantity of labor,
equipment and materials needed to deliver your
project.
• Summary of all the resources, that required to
complete a specific task.
Project Resource
Management Plan
This Resource Planning will help you identify the:

• Types of labor required for the project

• Roles and key responsibilities for each labor type
• Number of people required to fill each role
• Items of equipment to be used and their
purposes
• Types and quantities of equipment needed
• Total amount of materials needed
Resource Structure
Breakdown
• In project management, the Resource
Breakdown Structure (RBS) is a list of
resources related by function and
resource type that is used to facilitate
planning and controlling of project work.
• provides a consistent framework for
dividing the resources into small units for
planning, estimating, and managing.
Resource allocation
• Identify the resources needed in each
activity

• In project management, resource allocation

is the scheduling of activities and the
resources required by those activities
while taking into consideration both the
resource availability and the project time.
Resource Leveling
• Is a technique used to examine unbalanced use of
resources (usually people or equipment) over time.
• The main purpose of resource leveling is to create
a smoother distribution of resource usage and
reduce over allocation.
• It deals with both time (starting and ending date)
and resources, including manpower and budget.
Why Use Leveling?

• Reduce costs by not having people sit

around with nothing to do

• It results in fewer problems for project

personnel and accounting department
Resource Histogram
• The resource histogram is a tool that is
often used by the project management
team and or as a means of providing a
visual representation to the team and to
all of those interested parties.
Resource Loading
- Resource loading involves specifying the
types and quantities of resources required
to complete each activity in a project
- Mainly involves your manpower or employees.
- Resources can be identified
– By name (if you have individual
professionals with unique skills, this is a
reasonable approach)
Scheduling Resources

􀁺 A resource requirements list can be constructed

by listing each activity and the resources that
will be required
– Example
Activity Resource Days

Design Database System Analyst 7 days

􀁺 Required resources are then mapped to the

activity plan to assess the distribution of
resources required over the duration of the
project.
