An Analysis of Austin's Theory and Kinds of Speech Act Used in 1917 Movie

Austin's speech act theory divides speech acts into three kinds of levels: locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary. An analysis was conducted of the kinds of speech acts used in conversations between characters in the 1917 movie. The analysis found 76 locutionary acts, 377 illocutionary acts, which were the most used, and 68 perlocutionary acts. In conclusion, Austin's theory of speech acts is demonstrated in the movie, with illocutionary acts being the most prominent kind of speech act between characters.

Speech Act Theory originated with J. L. Austin. Austin started by


examining the view that a statement of fact ought to be verifiable in some
way. He believed that many philosophical problems had arisen because of a
desire to treat all utterances as verifiable statements.
