Material Self Uts

William James believed the core of the material self is the body. He also felt clothes are an important part of one's material self, as they allow people to express who they see themselves as or convey their status. Rudolf Lotze agreed that any object brought into contact with the body becomes incorporated into one's sense of self. Therefore, James and Lotze both saw clothing as a key part of forming and maintaining one's material self-image.

RUDOLFH HERMANN LOTZE

• He was a German philosopher and logician.

• He also had a medical degree and was well

versed in biology.

• He argued that if the physical world is

governed by mechanical laws, relations and
developments in the universe could be
explained as the functioning of a world mind .
• For James, the core of the material self was the body.
Second to the body, James felt a person's clothes were important to
the material self.

• He believed a person's clothes were one way they expressed

who they felt they were; or clothes were a way to show status,
thus contributing to forming and maintaining one's self-image.
• Williams James believed that clothing is an essential part of the
material self.

• Lotze in his book, Microcosmus, stipulates that

“ Any time we bring an object into the surface of

our body, we invest that object into the
consciousness of our personal existence taking
in its contours to be our own and making it part
of the self. ”
• The fabric and style of the clothes we wear brings
sensations to the body, to which directly affect our
attitudes and behavior. Thus clothes are placed in
second hierarchy of material self.

• Clothing is a form of self-expression. We choose and

wear clothes that are reflection of our self.
