RED 512: WEEK #5

THE IMMIGRANT EXPERIENCE

Imagine like it is your story
“My first day of school was the worst day of school because I don’t even know anyone, and
I don’t know what to do. It is hard for me to do everything in school and find the classroom.
It is hard to ask questions because I don’t know anybody, and I don’t understand the
language. I was afraid because everything here was different from where I lived in. I was
bored in class because I don’t have any friends to talk to and have anyone to sit with. It was
the worst day of school. I don’t even where I have to eat but even if I know it I will not
know how to get it and what should I take or not.
I feel like I don't fit in because it is hard to find help when you don’t know the language. I
also feel like I’m a stranger to this country. Sometimes I met with some of the students if
they talk good things about me or not because I don’t understand the language. But my
first week was still the same..."

Please share one sentence to the chat about how do you feel.

“You must study hard to show you are a good Korean.”
Juxtaposing Immigrant and Adolescent Girl
Experiences: Literature for All Readers-Stewart 2012
• “Studies show that adolescent immigrant girls are far too exposed
to literature that does not validate their identities nor mirror their
lived experiences”
• “A good book for youth is one that they are able to respond to
intimately based on their own life experiences”- Rosenblatt
• “Adolescent immigrant girls need to read books that mirror their
own experiences to negotiate the rocky paths they walk of being
an adolescent girl and being an immigrant”.
• “All students should be able to connect with texts in meaningful
ways, and it is our job as educators to mediate that connection.
Our main responsibility is to help the student to find the right book
for growth”

Small Group Discussion
American Street makes connections between a

American dream. What do you think about Fabiola's
story?
What kind of things did you notice about Fabiola's
story throughout the book?
Considering Stewarts' article and this week’s books
think about;
How can we use these literature texts as
transformative tools?
