Introduction
In computer science and information science,
an ontology is a formal representation of the
knowledge within a domain.
 It is used to reason about the properties of
that domain, and may be used to describe the
domain.
Combination between Ontology and Fuzzy
theory has create a new way to describe even
the uncertain knowledge.

3
Ontology Definition
An ontology is a 4-tuple O = (C, P, R, A),
where:
◦ C is a set of concepts defined for the domain.
◦ P is a set of concept properties.
◦ R is a set of binary semantic relations defined.
between concepts in C.
◦ A is a set of axioms.

4
Ontology Definition (cont.)
 Example of Concepts and Relations:

5
Domain Ontology
A domain ontology (or domain-specific ontology)
models a specific domain, or part of the world.
It represents the particular meanings of terms as
they apply to that domain.
There are four layers defined in the domain
ontology, including
◦ Domain layer
◦ Category layer
◦ Event layer,
◦ And class layer.

7
Fuzzy Ontology Definition
A fuzzy ontology is an extended ontology with
fuzzy concepts and fuzzy relationships.

8
Fuzzy Ontology Definition (cont.)
A fuzzy domain ontology is a 4-tuple OF(C, PF, RF, AF) where
◦ C is a set of concepts.
◦ PF is a set of properties, each as a 5-tuple pF(c, vF, qF, f, U):
 c ∈ C is an ontology concept.
 vF represents property values.
 qF models linguistic qualifiers.
 f is the restriction facets on vF.
 U is the universe of discourse.
◦ RF is a set of inter-concept relations between concepts, each is
defined as rF(c1, c2, t, sF, U):
 c1, c2 ∈ C are ontology concepts,
 t represents relation type
 U is the universe of discourse
 sF models relation strengths and is fuzzy concept at U.
◦ AF is a set of fuzzy rules.

 Example of fuzzy relations between concepts:

Fuzzy Ontology Applications
 One of the most important
applications is Semantic
Web.
 AI, systems engineering,
software engineering,
biomedical informatics,
library science, enterprise
bookmarking, and
information architecture
 And, more generally, the
Internet, Electronic
Commerce, Knowledge
Management.

12
Fuzzy Ontology Applications (cont.)
Another important application is
information retrieval.
More specifically, medical information
retrieval, data mining… have been the
subject of considerable research.

13
Fuzzy Ontology Applications (cont.)
Fuzzy Ontology changes the way of
software development:
◦ Knowledge base will be the core.
◦ Reasoning will be automated.
◦ No more: Solution not found!

Conclusion
Fuzzy ontology is an extension of
Domain ontology with Fuzzy relations
and rules.
Fuzzy concepts is more flexible than crisp
ones and promise a more complete way to
describe the world.
