The cooling lava has a
crust over it.
When totally cool it looks like this.

It’s called pahoehoe.

From the 1960
eruption of Mauna
Loa
This lava is rough and
broken.
It’s called aa.

the Earth’s crust which allows magma to seep

This has led to the creation of the Hawaiian
archipelago.
It already has a name!
Picture the relief on the faces of the National Park
rangers when the lava flow stopped short

of this ancient Hawaiian heiau (temple).

Day and night the lava moves.
Imagine the relief of the homeowners!
But it was only a temporary
reprieve.

 The City of Refuge
If you broke a taboo, like:
•Killing somebody
•stealing fish from the
chief’s fishpond
• letting your head get
higher than the chief’s
head
•Letting your shadow
cross the chief’s shadow
You were killed.
Unless . . .
You made it to
the city of
refuge.

If you stayed
in it for a
period of time
(3 weeks?)

Your crime was completely pardoned.

What other weird religion does this remind
