CHAPTER ONE OF THE

RESEARCH PAPER
INTRODUCTION:

 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

 SCOPE AND LIMITATION/DELIMITATION
 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
NOTE: NOT MORE THAN 7 PAGES BUT NOT LESS THAN 3 PAGES)
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

 Gives information about your chosen topic

 Explain why it is a problem
 Discusses why a research should be conducted about it
STEPS IN MAKING YOUR BACKGROUND OF
THE STUDY
 Discuss the problem in general and specific situations
 Includes your observation and experiences
 Explain ideas and concepts related to the topic
 Explain why you are interested in it
 State the goal of your research
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION/ LIMITATION

 Scope and Limitations/ Delimitation of the Study. The scope of the study involves
the time & money spent, the tools/materials and techniques used, and the number of
personnel needed for the study to be completed.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LIMITATION AND
DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY
LIMITATIONS include factors the researcher CANNOT
CONTROL,
Examples of limitations include:
Issues with sample and selection,
Insufficient sample size, population traits or specific
participants for statistical significance,
Lack of previous research studies on the topic which has
allowed for further analysis,
Limitations in the technology/instruments used to collect your
data,
Limited financial resources and/or funding constraints.
Delimitations refer to the boundaries of the
research study, based on the researcher’s decision
of what to include and what to exclude. They
narrow your study to make it more manageable and
relevant to what you are trying to prove.
 Examples of delimitations include:
 research objectives,
 research questions,
 research variables,
 target populations,
 statistical analysis techniques.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

 Significance of the study is written as part of the introduction section of a thesis. It

provides details to the reader on how the study will contribute such as what the study
will contribute and who will benefit from it. It also includes an explanation of the
work’s importance as well as its potential benefits.
TIPS IN WRITING A SIGNIFICANT OF THE
STUDY
 Refer to the Statement of the Problem
 Write it from General to Specific
example
It is expected that the result of the study will reveal essential information concerning if the attained grades in science of the students in AMISD-PC will affect their choice
of pursuing science or non- science related courses. Vital results of this research could be highly beneficial specifically to the following:

School Administrators

This study would enable them to find ways and means to improve the students’ abilities and skills that would inspire them to pursue meaningful careers.

Teachers

As the ones who have a huge part in the teaching process, this study would help them to cater a better learning experience for students.

Curriculum Planner

This study would give better understanding to them in implementing a suitable curriculum that would teach the skills and knowledge that the students need.

Students

The findings of this study would benefit and inspire them to formulate and act upon in their career plans in the future. Students may know on what career they should
choose in order to gain success in the future.

Future Researchers

Since such study does not appear and conducted much in other countries, the findings of this research will serve as reference for future researchers that would help them
in conducting their own research studies.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

A problem statement is a concise description of the problem or issues a STUDY seeks to

address.
After you have identified a research problem for your
project, the next step is to write a problem statement. An
effective problem statement is concise and concrete. It
should:
• Put the problem in context (what do we already know?)
• Describe the precise issue that the research will address (what do we need
to know?)
• Show the relevance of the problem (why do we need to know it?)
• Set the objectives of the research (what will you do to find out?)
Example:
This study aimed to identify the relationship between grades and careers that are to be selected. Specifically,
students’ grades in science subject, and their chosen careers that are related to science and those which are not.

The study sought to find solutions for the research questions below:

1. What is the students’ level of interest when it comes to such careers?

A. Science Related Careers
B. Nonscience Related Careers
2. What does grades have to do in selecting careers?
3. Is there significance between students’ grades in science subject and their selected science related career?
4. Is there significance between students’ grades in science subject and their selected nonscience related career?
