Global Demography
Demography – is the statistical study of human
population.

- it encompasses the study of the size,

structure, and distribution of these population,
and spatial and/or temporal changes in them in
response to time, birth, migration, aging, and
death.
Global Demography
Demographic Transition – refers to the transition
from high birth and death rates to low birth and
death rates as a country develops from a pre-
industrial to an industrialized to an economic
system.
Global Demography
Stage 1. Pre-Industrial Society/ High Stationary
 Death rates and birth rates are high and

roughly in balance
 Population growth is typically very slow

 Young population with short life span

 Population is dependent on rapid fluctuations

such as droughts and diseases.

 Every present day country has gone past this

stage.
Global Demography
Stage 2. Developing Country/Early Expanding
 Rapid drop in death rate while birth rate

remains high
 Large increase in population

 Decrease in infant mortality and increased in

life spans
 Improvements in food supply, public health

and agriculture
Global Demography
Stage 3 – Post-Industrial/Late Expanding
 Fall in birth rates, start to balance the lowering

death rates
 Birth rates fall due to access to contraception,

increase in wages, urbanization, and etc.

 Lower infant mortality rate hence smaller

families
 Demographic divided: increase in the ration of

working age to dependent population.

Global Demography
Stage 4 – Stabilization Period/Low Stationary
 Both low birth and death rates

 Population growth stabilized

 Higher production of foods

 More independence for women and work

opportunities.
Global Demography
Stage 5- Declining
 Total population is high

 Ageing population

 Less births and more deaths

 Overall population will decrease because of

low birth rates.

 Financial independence for women
