Environmental Economics: Topic 1

Environmental economics deals with the interrelationship between the environment and economic development. It studies how the environment is impacted by and impacts the economy. The environment provides resources that fuel economic activity and serves society in various ways like providing renewable and non-renewable resources, waste processing, and environmental services. However, economic activity like industrial waste and pollution can harm the environment. Environmental economists seek to understand these relationships and promote sustainable development.

Environmental Economics

Topic 1
Introduction
Basic Concepts
• Economics is a branch of social science which
deals as to how a society allocates its scarce
resources so that the maximum needs could
be fulfilled
• Environment refers to the surroundings or
conditions in which a person, animal, or plant
lives or operates.
Environmental Economics
Environmental economists see the human
economy behaves within the environment,
receiving resources and services from it.

That part of economics which deals with inter

-relationship between environment and economic
development and studies the ways and means by
which the environment is not impaired nor
economics is obstructed.
Why Economists Study Environment?

• Economics need to interact with its

surroundings in order to prevail in better
manner.
• The services rendered by the environment
cannot be set aside which aiming at economic
sustainability.
How Environment Serves Society?
1.Material Resources, provide the input for man’s
productive activities. These resources can be classified
into:
a. Renewable Resources
b. Non Renewable Resources
2. The wastes are cleaned up by the environment.
3. The environment provides life-support services such as
maintenance of genetic diversity and stabilization of the
ecosystem.
4. The environment provides us with various
environmental services like providing space for
recreation & scenery & wildlife for aesthetic enjoyment.
Main Environmental Problems
• Acidification (includes algal bloom, coral reef loss,
etc.)
• Air quality (air pollution, ozone pollution, ties to
human health.)
• Climate change Desertification
• Nuclear power, waste and pollution
• Over-exploitation of natural resources
• Deforestation (illegal logging, impact of fires, etc.)
Main Environmental Problems
• Energy • Over Population
• Environmental health • Water scarcity
• Food Safety • Industrial Waste
• Global Warming • Toxic chemicals
• Habitat loss • Eco-tourism
• Intergenerational equity • Deforestation
• Intensive farming • Desertification
• Pollution
Inter-relationship Between Environment &
Economics…
• There are environmental causes for economic
problems and economic causes for
environment problems.
Economics says “ Air and Water are
PUBLIC GOODS
Which must be used carefully

• Industrial and domestic wastes are the prime

cause of water pollution and air pollution.
…Inter-relationship Between Environment &
Economics
• Environment provides land, water, air, energy
resources, coal, oil, forests, minerals and
metals and so many other natural resources
which are essential for the economic
development of the economy.
• Economics uses these to produce goods for
mankind along with industrial waste
Environment takes the non cyclical wastes
and converts them back into harmless or
ecologically useful products.
Environmental values are economic
values; it is in principle just as important,
in the interests of economic efficiency and
therefore economic welfare, to conserve
our limited natural resources, to make
wise and sparing use of our limited clean
air, water and living space, as it is to
economize in the use of labor and capital.
