Projectile

Motion
PROJECTILE MOTION
• It is a form of motion where an object
moves in a parabolic path.
• The trajectory is the path that is followed by
an object.
• Objects thrown in the air are called
projectiles.
acceleration due to gravity

9.8m/s 2
The initial velocity of
a falling body from
rest is 0.
SAMPLE PROBLEM
Pedro throws the ball in a horizontal direction
with an initial velocity of 8m/s. Time elapsed
during the motion is 4s, calculate the height that
object is thrown and Vv component of the
velocity after it hits the ground. Calculate the
horizontal displacement or range.
SAMPLE PROBLEM
• Given:
•Vi = 8 m/s
•T =4s
•g = 9.8 m/s 2

•Vh = Vi
SAMPLE PROBLEM
• Required:
•h = ?
•Vv= ?
•r = ?
Height (dv)

• Formula: dv = Vit + 1/2gt2

• Substitution: dv = (8m/s)(4s) + ½(9.8m/s2)(4s)2

dv = 32m + ½ (9.8m/s2)(16s2)
dv = 32m + ½ (156.8m)
dv = 32m + 78.4m
dv = 110.4m
Vertical Velocity(Vv)

• Formula: Vv = gt

• Substitution: Vv = (9.8m/s2)(4s)
Vv = 39.2 m/s
Horizontal Distance/Range (dh)

• Formula: dh= Vht

• Substitution: dh = (8m/s)(4s)
dh = 32m
Projectile Motion
at an Angle
SAMPLE PROBLEM No. 1
John kicks the ball. The ball does projectile
motion with an angle of 53º to horizontal. Its
initial velocity is 10 m/s, find the maximum
height it can reach, horizontal displacement
and total time required for this motion.
SAMPLE PROBLEM
• Given:
•Vi = 10 m/s
•Cos53º = 0.60
•Sin53º = 0.80
•g = 9.8 m/s 2
SAMPLE PROBLEM
• Required:
•Vh = ? • dv = ?
•Vv = ? • dh = ?
•T= ?
•T time= ?
Horizontal Velocity (Vh)

• Formula: Vh= ViCosΘ

• Substitution: Vh = (10m/s)(Cos 53°)

Vh = (10m/s)(0.60)
Vh = 6m/s
Vertical Velocity (Vv)

• Formula: Vv= ViSinΘ

• Substitution: Vv = (10m/s)(Sin 53°)

Vv = (10m/s)(0.80)
Vv = 8m/s
•   Time (t)

• Formula: t =
• Substitution: t =
t = 0.82s
Total Time (T time)

• Formula: T time = 2t

• Substitution: T time = 2 (0.82s)

T time = 1.64s
•   Vertical Displacement/Height (dv)

• Formula: dv=
• Substitution: dv =
dv =
dv = 3.27m
Horizontal Displacement/Range (dh)

• Formula: dh= Vht

• Substitution: dh= (6m/s)(0.82s)
dh= 4.92 m
SAMPLE PROBLEM No. 2
An object is launched horizontally at an
angle of 35° upward with an initial
velocity of 15m/s. Find the maximum
height it can reach, total time of flight,
and its range.
SAMPLE PROBLEM
• Given:
•Cos35º = 0.82
•Sin35º = 0.57
•Vi = 15 m/s
•g = 9.8 m/s 2
SAMPLE PROBLEM
• Required:
•Vh = ? • dv = ?
•Vv = ? • dh = ?
•T= ?
•T time= ?
Horizontal Velocity (Vh)

• Formula: Vh= ViCosΘ

• Substitution: Vh = (15m/s)(Cos 35°)

Vh = (15m/s)(0.82)
Vh = 12.3m/s
Vertical Velocity (Vv)

• Formula: Vv= ViSinΘ

• Substitution: Vv = (15m/s)(Sin 35°)

Vv = (15m/s)(0.57)
Vv = 8.55m/s
•   Time (t)

• Formula: t =
• Substitution: t =
t = 0.87s
Total Time (T time)

• Formula: T time = 2t

• Substitution: T time = 2 (0.87s)

T time = 1.74s
•   Vertical Displacement/Height (dv)

• Formula: dv=
