CONSCIENCE
CONSCIENCE??
The Concept of

Conscience
the word is derived from the Latin word
“CONSCIENTIA” which means TRIAL of
ONESELF both in accusation and in defense
“itThe

Voice Within”
is an act of the practical judgment of reason
deciding upon an individual action as good and
to be performed or as evil and to be avoided.

Conscience is the sense

• Hence, it is an extension of the

Natural Law which guides man

that summons us to love
to seek the good of his nature.
good and avoid evil.
The Concept of Conscience
 It is the most
secret core and
sanctuary of a
person where he
can be alone
with God, whose
voice becomes
the master of
our acts.

Why
Formation and Development of Conscience
Two Reasons:
1. Because a person is
ultimately responsible for
his/her actions, nobody
else can be blamed for
them.
2. Being responsible simply
means being able to
respond to the call of God.
However, we can either
answer Him or ignore
Him.
Formation and Development of Conscience

“In forming conscience, one

should not fall into the
temptation of always sticking
to his/her own opinion.”
Formation and Development of Conscience

Some Checkpoints that

can Help Us Act
Correctly and Morally
from: Fr. Gerard Sloyan. “HOW DO I KNOW I AM DOING RIGHT.”
Formation and Development of Conscience
1. Have a pure intention
Sincerity is important. We
cannot invent our own
morality just so that we can
justify what is really
unjustifiable.
Formation and Development of Conscience
2. Consult the ff:
•teachings of Jesus in the
New Testament;
• Letters of St. Paul;
• laws given through Moses
•Reflect on these teachings,
especially the;
•Ten Commandments.
•Read and understand the
Bible.
Formation and Development of Conscience
3. Ask the question:
“How will this action of mine
measure up to the yardstick
of love?”
For Christians, every
authentic response to God and
neighbor is a response to love.
A real self-sacrificing attempt
to meet others and God.
Formation and Development of Conscience

4. Know the teachings of

bishops, theologians, holy
and learned individuals,
and the fellowship of
believers.
Formation and Development of Conscience
5. Follow the current
debate on the great
moral issues.
What are the pros and
cons regarding
abortion, mercy killing
and premarital sex?
What is the position of
the Church on these
issues?
Formation and Development of Conscience

6. Pray for God’s graceful guidance in all

your actions…Doing the right thing with
God’s help bring calmness and peace.
Formation and Development of Conscience

7. Be sorrowful for your

sins, confessing them fully
and humbly to the Priest,
and ask God to help you in
the process.
“By not acknowledging and
showing remorse for our sins,
we get used to them and our
conscience changes.”

DIVISION OF CONSCIENCE
KINDS OF ERRONEOUS CONSCIENCE

A. Scrupulous Conscience
= one that for little or no reason judges
an act to be morally evil when it is not,
or exaggerating the gravity of
sin or sees sin where it does not
exist.
KINDS OF ERRONEOUS CONSCIENCE

B. Perplexed Conscience

= judges wrongly that sin is committed

both in the performance or omission
of an act. One fears that sin is
committed whether it was actually
done or not.
KINDS OF ERRONEOUS CONSCIENCE

C. Lax Conscience
= one which refuses to be bothered
about the distinction of good and evil.
It rushes on and is quick to justify
itself. Many Filipinos who act on
impulse of “bahala na” on matters of
morals are acting with lax
conscience.
KINDS OF ERRONEOUS CONSCIENCE

D. Pharisaical Conscience

= minimizes grave sins but

maximizes small ones.
It is a subjective
assurance of the
lawfulness or
3. Certain unlawfulness of a
certain act. This
conscience implies that the
person has no doubt
or sure of his
decision.

DIVISION OF CONSCIENCE
When it fails to pass
a moral judgment in
the character of the
act due to fear or
error, or if the
person is unsure
4. DOUBTFUL about the
CONSCIENCE correctness of his
judgment.

True and Certain
Conscience are the
most binding kinds

We have to

We are bound to

FRIENDLY REMINDER FROM CHRIST

Following our conscience sometimes

involves sacrifices and difficult
encounters.
It’s not always easy to make the right
decision and do what is good.
EXAMINATION OF CONSCIENCE THROUGH
THE BEATITUDES

A simple way to use the Beatitudes is to reformat each Beatitude as a question:

1. Have I made myself poor in spirit or have I been filled with pride?
2. Have I comforted those who mourn or have I made others sad by my actions?
3. Have I been meek or have I let anger overcome me?
4. Have I hungered and thirsted for righteousness or have I intentionally done what
is wrong?
5. Have I been merciful or have I held grudges against people who offend me?
6. Have I kept my heart clean or have I looked at pictures or videos that are
inappropriate?
7. Have I sought to make peace with others or have I started arguments and fights?
8. Have I defended those who suffer insults or have I participated in gossip and
talking behind someone’s back?
