A stab wound is an injury caused by a pointed weapon being driven into the skin. Key aspects of a stab wound include the entry wound, depth and direction of the wound, and potential exit wound. The entry wound is usually larger than any exit wound. Examination can provide clues about the weapon used and relationship between assailant and victim, but the depth and full internal damage cannot be determined without further investigation like x-rays or autopsy.

STAB WOUNDS Definition
A stab wound is an injury caused by a more or
less pointed weapon when it is driven through the skin and its depth is greatest. Weapon like daggers , knifes , arrows , needle etc Stab wound
Description of stab wound include
Entry wound Depth and direction Wound of exit if present Wound of entry
The wound of entry is always present in stab
wound and is generally bigger the exit wound because the tabbing wound have tapering tip. Clothes may be pushed into wound of entry The shape of entry wound is related to weapon used Knife with on sharp cutting edge and other blunt edge may produced a wedge shape injury or injury with one end pointed and another blunt stab wound
With double edged knife injury makes
elliptical injury A round pointed weapon makes circular injury A pointed square shape weapon will make a cruciate injury Occurrence of stab wound in paired pattern suggest the use of weapon like pair of scissors. Depth and direction
External examination of stab wound gives no
idea of its depth direction and internal injuries. The depth of stab wound is greater then its length . The stab wound does not depend on length of weapon alone but it also depend on force applied. Depth and direction
It may correspond to length of the blade but
is greater if injury is caused on the part of the body such as abdomen It is generally not possible to measure the depth accurately due to presence of injury to internal viscera and blood clots. It is therefore advised to x ray all stab wound in search of possible broken part of the weapon of foreign body Depth and direction can only be measured accurately at autopsy At autopsy when stab wound is seen to go though cartilage or bone the cut surfaces must be saved in formalin for possible tool mark comparison with a suspected weapon Exit wound
The exit wound is generally smaller and its
edges are everted Hara kiri is unusual form of suicide where the abdomen is boldly punctured by a short sword in sitting position resulting in one large fatal wound causing sudden evisceration of abdominal organs followed by collapse and death. From careful examination of a stab wound it may be possible to determine The nature of weapon Approximate dimension of weapon Position of assailant and victim Volitional activity Nature of injury Stab wound is converging wound
