company to improve its environmental
performance, gaining a competitive advantage
and the trust of stakeholders.

14001 Standard?

standard that sets out the requirements
for an Environmental Management
System (EMS). It helps organizations
improve their environmental
performance through more efficient
use of resources and reduction of
waste, gaining a competitive advantage
and the trust of stakeholders.

Development of
ISO 14001 (EMS)

• ISO 14001:1996 - 1st Issue

• ISO 14001: 2004 – 2nd Issue
• ISO 14001: 2015 – 3rd Issue
What are the key
improvements?
ISO 14001:2015 now requires:
• Environmental management to be more prominent
within the organization’s strategic direction
• A greater commitment from leadership
• The implementation of proactive initiatives to
protect the environment from harm and
degradation, such as sustainable resource use and
climate change mitigation
• A focus on life-cycle thinking to ensure
consideration of environmental aspects from
development to end-of-life
• The addition of a stakeholder-focused
communication strategy
• It also allows for easier integration into other
management systems thanks to the same structure,
terms and definitions.
Example in
your industry
• Using waste plastics in road construction is a relatively new
idea and no roads have been constructed entirely
from plastics.
• Waste plastic has potential for use in
bituminous road construction as its addition in small doses
(about 5-10% by weight of bitumen) helps in substantially
improving the stability, strength, fatigue life and other
desirable properties of bituminous mixes, leading to improved
longevity and pavement performance (Kalantar et al., 2012;
Vasudevan et al., 2012; Indian Road Congress, 2013).
• Laboratory and field performance studies report that using
waste plastic in bituminous mixes increases durability and
results in higher resistance to deformation and water induced
damage, indirectly contributing to user satisfaction and
accident reduction (Bale, 2011; Behl et al., 2012; Bhoot et al.,
2012; Khursheed and Singh, 2017; Manju et al., 2017).
• The addition of waste plastic in the bituminous mix results in a
reduction of bitumen consumption, thereby resulting in
reduction of costs (Vasudevan and Rajasekaran, 2006; Rashid
et al., 2009; Behl et al., 2012; Vasudevan et al., 2012).
• Using waste plastic for road construction also contributes to
longer road service life (Sojobi et al., 2016).
• It is concluded that the use of plastic wastes for construction
applications will improve the sustainability of the environment
significantly, and also serve as a reliable source of materials
for construction purposes.

Myths of ISO
14001
• It is only applicable to
manufacturing.
• It isn’t required if we are legally
compliant.
• It is only for already “green”
organizations.
• It is about creating a lot of
unnecessary documents.
• It won’t add value and it will cost
too much to implement.
• It will stop us from being flexible
and innovative.
Key to Success
• Top management commitment
• Assigned roles, responsibilities, and authorities
• Appropriate resources
• Participation at all levels
• A structured and documented implementation plan
• Correct training, education, and awareness
• Adequate procedures and documentation
• Effective audit

Audit Findings

Major Non-Conformity

Minor Non-Conformity

Observation
Audit Findings
• A Major Non-Conformity relates
to the absence or total
breakdown of a required process,
or a number of minor non-
conformity listed against similar
areas.
• A Minor Non-Conformity at the
Registration Audit – Stage 2
would defer recommendation for
registration until that major has
been closed.
• Observation - An observation
is an item for improvement so as
not to result in a non-conformity.
Audit Findings
• Difference between Non-Conformity and Observation

• Observation - An observation is an item for improvement

so as not to result in a non-conformity.
Whereas
• A Non-Conformity must be handled as soon as possible by
the specified due date and should always be followed by a
corrective and preventive action plan, including root cause
analysis.

n Process
Implementation
Guidelines
• Implementation plan will need to cover:

• Education on the ISO 14001 standard

• Organization’s environmental position with regards to
the ISO 14001 standard.
• Gap Analysis
• An implementation plan on the gap analysis
• Time to run the EMS, collect information and make
improvements before the registration audit.
Conduct Gap Analysis
• Organization’s position with regards to the environment:

• Are there gaps that need to be bridged?

• What are they and where are they located?
• How can they be improved?
• Who will be taking corrective/ preventive actions?
• Environmental position needs to be analyzed so that the
gaps can be bridged /closed.
