Lesson 3 - Distance Between Two Points

This document discusses how to calculate the distance between two points using the distance formula. It gives the formula as d = (x2 - x1)2 + (y2 - y1)2, where (x1, y1) are the coordinates of the first point and (x2, y2) are the coordinates of the second point. It provides examples of using the formula to find the distance between various point pairs.

Finding Distance
• What is the distance between U(5 , 8) and V(-3 , 8)?

Given: U (5, 8) and V (-3, 8)

(x1, y1) = (5, 8) (x2, y2) = (-3, 8)

d  ( x2  x1 ) 2  ( y2  y1 ) 2
Finding Distance
• What is the distance between U(5 , -4) and V(5 , 6)?

Given: U (5, -4) and V (5, 6)

(x1, y1) = (5, -4) (x2, y2) = (5, 6)

d  ( x2  x1 ) 2  ( y2  y1 ) 2
3. Slant

• To determine the distance between

two points of a slant line segment
add the square of the difference of
the abscissa to the square of the
difference of the ordinates and take
the positive square root of the sum.
Finding Distance
• What is the distance between U(2 , -2) and V(6 , 1)?

Given: U (2, -2) and V (6, 1)

(x1, y1) = (2, -2) (x2, y2) = (6, 1)

d  ( x2  x1 ) 2  ( y2  y1 ) 2
SAMPLE PROBLEM

4. The vertices of a triangle are E (-3,8),

F (5, 5) and G (-6, 0). Show that the
triangle formed is a right triangle.
SEATWORK 1.3
1. Determine the distance between
a. (-2, 3) and (5, 1)
b. (6, -1) and (-4, -3)
2. Show that points A (3, 8), B (-11, 3) and C (-8, -2) are
vertices of an isosceles triangle.
