• A little About myself
• What do we expect to learn from this course
• Expectations
• Teaching Methods
• Why do we learn this?
• Grade Distributions (Why you all came today really )
Instructor Profile
• B.E. in Electrical Engineering from AUB. Class of 2012
• Worked for a couple of years at reputable contracting and design
firms
• Came back for a Masters. Graduated with a Masters in Engineering
Management in 2016
• PhD Civil Engineering (Construction Management Emphasis) in 2020
• Currently an analyst in the UK!
• Research Interests: Labor Productivity, Project controls & Contracting
Learning Outcomes
An understanding of basic
Solve basic engineering
concepts in probability
problems involving discrete
including independence,
and continuous probability
conditional probability and
distributions
Bayes’ rule

Use statistical concepts such

as means, variances and
Perform statistical inference
various graphics to analyze
such as hypothesis testing
datasets using
and regression
computational software
such as R
Why do we need probability?
Quality Management?
System Design
Data Science
• A lot of you want to go into the fields of machine learning, data
mining, and artificial intelligence
• But, these are built on probability and statistics 
General
• Gambling (not recommended  )
• Stock Market Analysis
• Politics
The scientific method
For Next Week
• Download and Install R on your machine
• Start thinking about ideas for the project
Expectations

What?
Expectations
• I expect you to attend classes prepared
• Keep tiktok and whatsapp away when in class
• Do the required readings
• Ask questions!
• Have fun!
• Since we are online the slides will be ugly: Sorry lots of text but I need
them to be stand alone 
Method of Instruction
• Due to COVID-19 and Benzene (How does probability apply here ? )
and the new world we live in:
• We are meeting through a screen
• To get attendance you need to participate
• Meaning if you sit around doing nothing you wont get attendance 
Why do we Care?
