Breeding in Fish

This document outlines the objectives and key concepts around fish breeding. It defines natural and artificial breeding, and notes that natural breeding occurs when fertilized eggs develop naturally into new fish. The document details the two types of natural breeding and explains artificial breeding as manipulating mature fish to spawn other than by natural means. It lists five key benefits of artificial breeding and describes the processes of stripping brood fish and mixing milt and eggs to fertilize them.

Objectives of the lesson

i. define the term breeding in fish;

ii.mention the two types of breeding in fish;
iii.
state five importance of artificial breeding;
iv.state the procedures of stripping of male and
female fish and
v. explain fertilization in mixing the milt and the
eggs.
Breeding or reproduction in fish is the
ability of an adult fish to give rise to or
reproduce its kind. When this does not
occur naturally, it is called induced
breeding.
There are two types of reproduction in fish.
They are natural and artificial reproduction.
Natural Breeding

This occurs when fertilized eggs undergoes

embryological changes and develops into a new
fish. In most fish species (individual is with either
male or female reproductive organs) the male
produces sperm (milt) and the female produces
eggs.
Types of Natural Breeding

i. Induced natural spawning

ii. Hormone induced spawning
Induced Natural Spawning.
This process involves the manipulation of
the fish’ environment by stimulating
external environment so as to resemble
the natural spawning environment.
Hormone induced spawning.

In case of fish failure to spawn in confined

water, the reproduction can only be achieved
by hormonal inducement of ovulation of the
matured and ripe fish.
After fertilization, the female of some
species releases its eggs into the water
before they hatch. This is called
ovoviviparity. Examples are guppies and
angel sharks.
Other species hatch the eggs inside their
body and so give birth to their young living
fish. This is called viviparity. Examples are
surf perches, lemon sharks, great white
shark, eagle rays etc.
Artificial Reproduction in Fish

This is the manipulation of the

sexually mature fish to spawn
or reproduce young fishes
other than by natural means.
Artificial Breeding Practice of Fish

Artificial propagation (Stripping of

brood stock).
Artificial propagation (Stripping of brood stock).

It is purely artificial propagation method

and it is the most advanced breeding
technique.
This involves the use of brood stock.
Importance of Artificial Breeding
1. To obtain fish seeds.
2. To obtain a large quantity of fish seed for
aquaculture.
3. It allows for scientific manipulations for the
production of high quality hybrids for fish.
4. To make fingerlings available at all times for
cultivation.
5. It ensures better rate of fertilization and
hatching.
6. It provides better conditions for growth and
survival.

Note: Check the class folder for the video and write out its
importance.
Incubation of fertilized eggs
This is done in the aquarium, hatchery tank or hatchery
trough.
i. The fertilized eggs are kept in fishery
apparatus(incubator).
ii. Incubation of fertilized eggs is done in the incubation
tank containing water at temperature of 26-28°C.
iii. The fertilized eggs in the mixture are spread thinly onto
the incubation net in the incubation tank.
iv. The quality of water is maintained.
v. After hatching the embryos escape from the eggs
and gather at the bottom of the incubation tank.

vi. The tank net which now contains dead eggs,

empty egg shells, unfertilized eggs and deformed
embryos is removed to prevent infection of the
embryos by bacteria and saprophytic fungi or
water mould, e.g. Saprolegia spp.
