Introduction to Green Building :
Green building - also known as sustainable or
high performance building - is the practice of:
Increasing the efficiency with which buildings
and their sites use and harvest energy, water,
and materials; and Protecting and restoring
human health and the environment,
throughout the building life-cycle: design,
construction, operation, maintenance,
renovation and reconstruction.
 LEED Rating System
LEED = Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design
 Developed by US Green Building Council
 It is national standard and provides complete
frame work for green building
 LEED India
Green Building Concept :
 The `Green Building' concept is
gaining importance in various countries,
including India. These are buildings that
ensure that waste is minimized at every
stage during the construction and
operation of the building, resulting in
low costs, according to experts in the
technology.

 Construction is same, difference is in

various decisions made during the
construction process.
Cont…. :
 The techniques associated with the `Green
Building' include measures to prevent erosion
of soil, rainwater harvesting, preparation of
landscapes to reduce heat, reduction in usage
of potable water, recycling of waste water and
use of world class energy efficient practices.
What makes a building "green"? :
A green building is a structure that is
environmentally responsible and resource-
efficient throughout its life-cycle. These
objectives expand and complement the
classical building design concerns of economy,
utility, durability, and comfort.
Green buildings are designed to reduce the
overall impact of the built environment on
human health and the natural environment
by: Efficiently using energy, water, and other
resources Protecting occupant health and
improving employee productivity Reducing
waste, pollution and environment degradation
GREEN BUILDING FEATURES:
Common "Green Building" Features

 Energy conservation features:

insulation, efficient lights and
mechanical equipment

 Solar energy utilization: passive space

heating, cooling; water heating;
photovoltaic electricity generation.

 Water conservation features: low

consumption fixtures
 Incorporation of recycled materials, or
materials with large fraction recycled
content

 Low emitting material selection and

ventilation for improved indoor air
quality

 Reduced building construction waste

and re-sourcing waste products
• How Buildings Become Green :
 Materials:
Pollution prevention measures in
manufacturing, Recycled content, Reduction
of construction waste, Local materials, Energy
efficiency, Water treatment/conservation, Use
of non-toxic or less-toxic materials,
Reusability, Recyclability, Biodegradable.
 Lighting:
Daylighting, Orientation of the building , Light
shelves.
 Water resources management:
Conservation of water and Waste water
treatment.
 Ventilation and cooling:
Ventilation is the process of circulating air
through a building.
Artificial/mechanical ventilation
Natural ventilation
Elements of Green Buildings
 Albedo Paints
 Sky Lights
 Double Glazed Windows
 Automatic Sprinklers
 Wind Ducts
 Terrace Garden
 CFL (Chloro Florescent Lights)
 Infiltration Wells
 Solar Lighting System
 Big Ventilators
Albedo Paints
 Reflects sunlights
 Reduces building surface temperature and heat transfer to
the interior of building
Sky Lights
Double Glazed Window

Double Glazed windows sandwich a layer of air or inert gas

between the two layers of glass.

Reduces the heat loss as compared to single pane of glass by

as much as 50%
Automatic Sprinkler System
• Auto Sprinkles the roof with water when
temperature rises above certain degree
Wind Ducts
• Wind Ducts provide cool air at center of the
room from the roof
 Terrace Garden
• Benefits Of Green Building :
Buildings have an enormous impact on the
environment, human health, and the
economy. The successful adoption of green
building strategies can maximize both the
economic and environmental performance of
buildings.
• Environmental benefits :
Enhance and protect biodiversity and
ecosystems Improve air and water quality
Reduce waste streams Conserve and restore
natural resources .
• Economic benefits :
Reduce operating costs Create, expand, and
shape markets for green product and services
Improve occupant productivity Optimize life-
cycle economic performance .
Typical Payback

Building Built-in Area Rating % increase Payback (Yrs)

(Sqft) Achieved in cost

CII-Godrej GBC 20,000 Platinum (56 20 % 7 years

points)

ITC Green Platinum (52

Centre, 1,70,000 15 % 6 years
Gurgaon points)

Platinum (57
Wipro, Gurgaon 1,75,000 Points) 8% 5 years

Grundfos Gold (42

Pumps, Chennai 40,000 Points) 6% 3 years
• Social benefits :
Enhance occupant comfort and health
Heighten aesthetic qualities Minimize strain
on local infrastructure Improve overall quality
of life .
CASE STUDY
GULBARGA: The country's first `green'
building in the government sector,

The evaporative cooling technique has been used in the

construction of the office complex to bring down room
temperature from 44 degrees C to 34 degrees C.. Installed with
passive coolinf features such as wind towers, rooftop gardening.
Other renewable energy sources utilised such as solar-wind hybrid
power generation, solar photovoltaic system etc.
DUBIOTECH: New Largest Green Building in Dubai

The new headquarters of Dubiotech is set to be one of the world’s

largest green buildings. The LEED certified 22-story headquarters and
laboratory buildings will be home to the center of excellence for
biotechnology education and research, with two connected buildings
oriented to maximize day-lighting and views while minimizing solar
gain. It will also integrate a 500,000 sq ft animal reserve for
indigenous conservation and wildlife protection.
WIPRO OFFICE BUILDING, KOCHI.
 Conclusion:
The fact that a green building is healthier to
its occupants and socially conscious in making
an effort to reduce pollution and other
environmental impacts of the construction
process makes the whole building quite
invaluable.
India must turn “green” for a better and
healthy India.
So
