WHAT IS FUNDAMENTAL
COUNTING PRINCIPLES?

◦The Fundamental Counting Principle


states that we can find the total number
of ways that two or more separate tasks
can happen by multiplying the number of
ways each task can happen separately.
WHAT IS FUNDAMENTAL
COUNTING PRINCIPLES?
 
◦ If one thing can occur in m ways and a second thing can
occur in n ways, and a third thing can occur in p ways,
and so on, then the sequence of things can occur in

How many ways are there when we roll 2 dice?
Example #2:
 How many possible outcomes are there when you roll a die and
toss a coin?
There are 6 outcomes when a die is rolled
there are two outcomes when a coin is flipped.
Therefore, we have

◦ The shop sells shirts in sizes S, M, L and XL. Each size comes in five
colors: red, yellow, white, orange, and blue. The shirts come in
short sleeve and long sleeve. How many kinds of shirts are there?

how many different choices does the buyer have?

may Irish enter and leave?
Assignment:
A witness to a bank robbery reported to the police
that the car plate number of the gateway car
contained the 3-digit number that the last digit is 3.
The witness could not remember the first two digits
but he is sure that they are non-zero and is different
from one another, How many car plate numbers at
the most will have to checked by the police?
