NAVIGATING THE MENU/CAMERA
You can scroll through the menu screens using the multi-function dial on the left side of the camera or the
two 8-way multi-function pads on the top handle or back of the right hand grip. The pads give you the
option of not only navigating up and down but right and left and 4 variations in between.
To select a menu item simply press in on the multi function dial or the two 8-way pads on your top
handle or right grip.
You can use these to navigate through the viewfinder settings as well.
Cancel/Back Button under the Multi-Function Dial will take you back to the previous menu setting.

STATUS MENUS
If you push the menu button once you get into
to the Status Menu. There are 10 different
status menu pages you can scroll through
using the multi function dial or the two 8-way
pads on your top handle or right grip

On the FX6 you can change different settings

in the Status Menu that are in gray boxes.
Anything without a gray box can not be
changed in this menu.

If you are using the User Menu Only setup for

the main menus (which we will be doing in
this class) you cannot change anything in the
status menu.

TOUCH SCREEN
This camera has a touch screen feature that we will map to assign button #6 on the
right handle. We would prefer you to turn this off in the class, but this is a personal
preference, but here is why we feel you should leave it off.
1. Learn to use the multi-function dial and the 8-way multi-function pads on the top
handle and back of the the right hand grip. You can do everything you do with the
touch screen, often faster using the dial and pads.
2. There is no electronic viewfinder on this camera, and this means the LCD is the only
way to view an image. Poking the LCD with sweaty, dirty fingers is not how I would
treat the only way I have to see the image on the camera – unless you buy an external
monitor or electronic viewfinder.
3. Using the LCD hood makes touch screen a bit harder to accomplish easily.

USER MENU SETUP
SETTING UP THE CAMERA TO ONLY SHOW THE
USER MENU
You can set the camera up to only show the user menu when
you hold the Menu Button down for 2 seconds. This will
help prevent you from going in and accidently changing any
of the 500 sub menus. We recommend you do this.

How to show only the User Menu in the Viewfinder
Hold down the Menu button for 2 seconds, go to User Menu,
scroll down to Menu Settings and tun on User Menu Only
When you do this the 10 other menu tabs will be grayed out –
meaning you can’t access them.

How to get out of only showing the User Menu

Hold in the Menu Button for 2 seconds, go to User Menu, scroll
down to Menu Settings, and turn this off.

VIEWFINDER SETUP
1. MF – Tell you if you are in Manual Focus (MF) or Auto Focus (AF)
Both the lens and the camera need to be in auto focus for the camera to be in auto focus.
If either is in manual focus the lens is in manual focus.
For Push Auto Focus to work you need to have the lens in auto focus and the camera in manual
focus.
2. 1.2ft – This is the focus distance and is measured from the focal plane symbol on the right side
of the camera to the focal point you set your focus point on.
3. 105mm – This is the focal length of the lens. 24mm = wide focal length, 105mm = long focal
length.
4. Steadyshot Off – the vertical hand with off tells you that the steady shot is off. Keep this off
when you are shooting on sticks (this entire class) and turn it on if you are hand holding the
camera.
5. A 82min = This tells you what media card slot you are recording to – here it’s A and how much
recording time in minutes you have left on that card.

6. W: P 5600K – this is the white balance information. Here it is telling you that you are in Preset White
Balance (P) and that your Kelvin degree color temperature is set in PRESET at 5600K (daylight).
This can read A or B instead of P if you are in the custom A &B white balance modes instead of preset.
Color temperature on this camera ranges from 2500K (warm) to 15000K (bluish)
7. TCG = Time Code Generator. The camera should be in free run for time code and set to the local time –
known as ToD Timecode (Time of Day). This display can change with a menu button to show TC, User Bits
or act as a shot timer showing you the duration of the shot.
8. F9 = f-stop. This measures the aperture of the camera and lens which ranges on this lens from f/4 which
lets more light in to f/22 which lets very little light in.
9. L 0dB = ISO Gain Switch Position. This goes from L (Low) (OdB) to M (Medium) (6dB) to H (High)
(12dB) Each adding one more stop of sensitivity to the sensor.
10. 1/48 = Shutter Speed this is set normally to mimic the natural motion blur we see without eyes and the
general rule of thumb for setting this is to make twice the frame rate of the camera to emulate that natural
motion blur. In this class we shoot at 24fps so we normally have this set for 1/48 of a second shutter. This is
known as the 180-degree shutter speed rule

11. Camera Level = the green level is there to help you tell if your camera is crooked. When it’s green you
are straight when it’s gray and yellow you are crooked.
12. Audio Meters CH1 & CH2 = these are the cameras audio meters. These should be peaking about ¾ of
the way up the meters for good audio. Use page 3 of the Status Menu to see a full size VU meter for setting
the audio levels correctly – peaking between -10 and -20dB.
13. Waveform Monitor = The waveform monitor is an exposure aid that helps you set correct exposure and it
has Zebra Points or yellow lines in it. Black on the waveform is a the bottom (OIRE) and White is on the top
(100IRE). On this camera any video level over 90IRE is overexposed and blown out.
This can be turned off or changed to a histogram or Vectorscope with assign button #9 on the side of the
Viewfinder
14. Base Hi = This is the base or native ISO for this camera and there are two modes (Dual Base ISO). Low
is set for ISO800 natively and High is set for ISO 12800 which gives you 4 stops more light sensitivity. Low
is for exterior shooting, High for interior.
15. S-Cinetone = this Is one of two base looks – the other being CINE EI. This is a hybrid gamma mode that
falls somewhere between standard gamma and log gamma.

16. XAVC-I = this is the recording codec, one of two on the camera.
17. 23.98P = Frequency or frame rate. This is your traditional feature film frame rate – also
known as 24P. The P stands for Progressive recording vs interlaced.
18. 1920X1080 = this is the resolution you are shooting on the camera in this class – true HD.
19. DC IN 20V – when connected to AC Power this tells you what the power voltage is, when
using a battery there will be a battery indicator icon here showing the remaining minutes of battery
life left.
20. Rule of Thirds Grid – the tic tac toe style grid in the viewfinder is called the rule of thirds grid
but Sony calls it the Frame Guide in the Marker Menu.

21. Center Cross = this is a center cross overlay that can be turned off or changed in
the menu setup too four different center cross overlays.
22. A Stby = At the top of the LCD is another Media Card Icon and the Stby/Rec
Light
23. FF = Full Frame mode. The camera can also record in a cropped Super 35mm
frame mode.
24. Randy202110 – this is the Clip Name that you set in the User Menu.

PEAKING AND ZEBRA STRIPES
Although there are no peaking or
Zebra stripes icons in the viewfinder,
please make sure that you have
peaking on and that you are using
Zebra 2. These are the peaking and
Zebra Buttons on the left side of the
viewfinder.

On the left side is also assign button
