Introduction of the course


Dr. Jasmin Fouad
Class This 3-credit introductory course provides a general
Design survey of finance. It emphasizes the understanding
of the principles and basic concepts and techniques
applied in finance and their application in business
enterprises. This Fall 2021it will be taught face to
face for the first time after three online semesters . I
will use Backboard as the Learning Management
System; all classes will include a pre-recorded video
that you will watch prior to the class time, and we
will have our two classes each week during the class
time in the lab JAMEEL 1065.

• Please note that I check my emails regularly during weekdays. Any email from 9 am to 5 will
be answered promptly. I however will not respond to emails over the weekend except for
very urgent matters. All my announcements will be posted on Blackboard and you will be
notified by an email. You have at least one week before any submission
Teaching Our main objective is to equip students with all the
Philosophy instruments required for the academic and
professional challenges ahead.
We work together on real data and cases and simulate
real life experiences, starting from their first job
interview to board meetings, road shows etc. We also
spend a good amount of our classes to work and
discuss current regional and global financial news and
their impact on the Egyptian Financial Market. All the
classes of this course require the use of Excel, so
students develop their Excel skills, hand in hand with
their financial knowledge and skills.
 
Business •This introductory course provides a general survey of
Finance finance. It emphasizes the understanding of the
principles and basic concepts and techniques applied
in finance and their application in business
enterprises. Topics covered include: introduction to
the Egyptian Financial Market, present and future
value analysis, valuation of stocks and bonds,
risk/return trade off, capital budgeting and the
calculation of the cost of capital. Moreover, field work
exposure will be attained through the analysis of real
life domestic and international case studies. Basic and
intermediate use computer spreadsheets (Excel) will
be enhanced.
Intended • Understand the role, characteristics and
Learning functioning of Financial Markets.
Outcomes • Apply the concept of time value of money in
(ILO’s) valuation.
• Calculate the financial risk/return of various
financial instruments using Excel.
• Learn how to price stock and bonds.
• Estimate the cost of capital
• Understand and apply capital budgeting
techniques
