CREATIVITY – ACTIVITY - SERVICE WHAT IS CAS?
Creativity: arts and other activities involving
creative thinking Action: physical exertion contributing to a healthy life style Service: unpaid and voluntary, an exchange that has a learning benefit for the student. The rights, dignity, and autonomy of all those involved are respected. WHY IS CAS IMPORTANT AND COMPULSORY?
• THE MAIN REASON THAT CAS IS A COMPULSORY PART OF THE IB DIPLOMA IS TO
ENCOURAGE STUDENT SELF-DEVELOPMENT. IT IS MEANT TO DEVELOP A HEALTHY AND BALANCED LIFESTYLE WITH AN AWARENESS OF THE PROBLEMS FACED IN OUR WORLD
• IT IS ONE OF THE CORE SUBJECTS FOR THE FULL DIPLOMA.
WHY IS CAS INCLUDED IN THE IB?
• EDUCATION SHOULD EXTEND BEYOND THE CLASSROOM.

CAS IS EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING
• IT IS A PROCESS WHICH GOES THROUGH DIFFERENT STAGES:
• PLAN, ACT. CONCRETE EXPERIENCE • OBSERVE, REFLECT. ONGOING CRITICAL REFLECTION • NEW UNDERSTANDINGS. FRAMING OF CONCEPTS • APPLY LEARNING IN NEW SITUATIONS. RESPONSIBILITIES OF A STUDENT
• SELF-REVIEW AT THE BEGINNING OF CAS
• PLAN, DO AND REFLECT (PORTFOLIO) • UNDERTAKE REVIEWS WITH CAS ADVISOR ON A REGULAR BASIS • TAKE PART IN A RANGE OF ACTIVITIES. AT LEAST ONE SUSTAINED PROJECT MUST BE AT LEAST PARTIALLY INITIATED BY THE STUDENT AND INVOLVE AT LEAST TWO OF THE AREAS - CREATIVITY, ACTION, OR SERVICE RESPONSIBILITIES OF A STUDENT

ACHIEVEMENTS. 2. SHOW EVIDENCE OF ALL LEARNING OUTCOMES 3. REPETITION SHOULD BE AVOIDED 4.GROWTH MUST CONTINUALLY OCCUR. DOCUMENTATIONS – REFLECTION – THE PORTFOLIO
• JOURNALS, SCRAP BOOK, PHOTO ESSAY, VIDEO, PPT
• WHAT DID YOU PLAN AND WHAT DID YOU DO? • WHAT WERE THE OUTCOMES FOR YOURSELF AND OTHERS? • REFLECT ON HOW YOU FELT, YOUR PERCEPTIONS, YOUR DISCOVERIES, THE VALUE OF THE ACTIVITY, WHAT YOU LEARNED. REFLECTION IS A KEY LINK BETWEEN TOK AND CAS Reflection is a key link between TOK & CAS •• Reflection in the CAS process should involve some critical thinking by the learner in evaluating and choosing experiences.
•• Critical thinking and reflection must be used in putting together the
final CAS presentation CAS LEARNING OUTCOMES
• WE HAVE SEVEN LEARNING OUTCOMES FROM WHICH WE NEED TO COVER
THROUGH OUR REFLECTIONS AND PORFOLIO. EXAMPLE OF A WRITTEN REFLECTION:
• 17 FEBRUARY: I WOULDN'T SAY MY FOOTBALL ABILITY IS TERRIBLE BUT I
WOULD LIKE TO IMPROVE ON THE SKILLS I ALREADY HAVE. DURING SECONDARY SCHOOL, I WOULD OCCASIONALLY PLAY FOOTBALL, HOWEVER, IN MY OPINION, THERE WAS NO REAL PASSION BEHIND IT. I PLAYED FOOTBALL JUST BECAUSE I HAD TO, HOWEVER, OVER THE GIVEN TWO YEAR PERIOD, I'VE GROWN TO THE SPORT AND BEGAN WATCHING A LOT MORE ON TELEVISION. THIS HAS DRIVEN ME FORWARD INTO BUILDING UPON THE SKILLS I HAVE INTO A BETTER PLAYER OVERALL. ALSO, THIS WOULD HELP ME KEEP FIT AND HEALTHY WHILE STUDYING THE IB. THE FIRST WEEK, I FILLED IN THE MIDFIELD ROLE TO PUSH FOR A 3-1 VICTORY OVER THE OPPOSING TEAM. GOOD START TO A PROMISING FUTURE I THOUGHT.
