    Active and Passive Voice

    An action of a subject, in relation of an object,


    is expressed in two ways. These two ways of
    expressing action of a subject are known as
    Voices.
    The structure of same sentence changes when
    expressed as Active or Passive Voice.
    The meaning of a sentence, either expressed as
    Active or Passive Voice, remains the same.
    Active Voice
    Subject + Verb + Object
    Active Voice describes a sentence where the
    subject performs the action stated by the Verb.
    The Active voice is more common than Passive
    Voice.
    Active Voice is more direct than Passive Voice.

    Example- Birds build nests.


    Passive Voice
    Object + Verb + Subject
    In Passive Voice sentences, the subject is acted
    upon by the Verb.
    The Passive Voice creates a new Subject.
    Passive Voice is used to stress the action rather
    than the doer of the action.
    Past Participle is used in Passive voice.

    Example-Nests are built by birds.


    When to use Passive Voice
    In general , the Passive voice is less direct , less
    forceful, more polite and less concise than the
    active voice.
    Example- A mistake was made.(better than You
    have made a mistake)
    Use passive voice when we don’t know or don’t
    want to reveal the performer of action.
    Use passive voice when we don’t want to emphasize
    the receiver of action and we prefer to emphasize
    on the action. My bike was stolen.
    Rules for changing Active to Passive
    Rule 1- Change of Pronoun
    ACTIVE VOICE PASSIVE VOICE

    I ME
    WE US

    YOU YOU

    SHE HER

    HE HIM

    THEY THEM

    IT IT

    WHO WHOM
    Rule 2- Change in Tense
    Only 3rd form of verb or Past Participle will be used
    as a main verb in Passive Voice
    By is used in the Passive Voice when the actor
    needs to know the job.
    The sentences of the following Tenses can’t be changed
    to Passive Voice :
    • Present Perfect Continuous
    • Past Perfect Continuous
    • Future Continuous
    • Future Perfect Continuous
    • Sentences having Intransitive Verbs(a verb that
    doesn’t take a direct object i.e. never followed by a
    noun)
    Example- She grew up.
    She grew up to be a farmer.(Prepositional phrase)
    Prepositional phase-Made up of preposition and object
    Examples- Around the world, near the ocean etc.
    Sentences which cannot be changed in
    passive voice
    Intransitive Verb- A sentence which does not
    have a direct Object
    Example-
    He laughs
    They sleep
    Transitive verb – has a direct object
    Active voice Passive voice

    The audience enjoyed The jokes were enjoyed.


    the jokes.
    The kids liked the The speaker was like by

    The librarian scheduled The event was scheduled

    Intransitive verb- does not have a direct object
    Active voice Passive voice

    I go to school.
    Prepositional Phase
    I attend the school. School is attended by me.
    Everyone clapped when the speaker
    finished.
    Today we will go over the material
    we learned yesterday.
    Phrasal verb
    She sneezes in class.
    Voice using Modals
    Passive voice for May have , Might have , Should have, Must have ,
    Ought to have
    Verbs followed by
    Modals(Can ,Could ,May ,Might ,Would ,Should ,Ought -Modal Auxiliary
    + be + Third form of Verb)
    Imperative Sentence- A sentence that expresses a
    command, or a request or an advice is called an Imperative
    Sentence
    Characteristics-
    Structure-Let+ object+ Be/Not be +V3
    Sentences which express Request , Order, Advice phrases
    such as You are requested to, advices to, ordered to are
    used.
    Words kindly/please are dropped.
    Change the sentences into Passive voice:
    1.People speak Portuguese in Brazil.
    2. A friend gave me this sweater.
    3. A knock at the door woke us all up.
    4. He wore a blue shirt.
    5. May God bless you with happiness.
    1. Portuguese is spoken in Brazil.
    2. This sweater was given to me by a friend.
    3. We were all woken up by a knock at the door.
    4. A blue shirt was worn by him.
    5. May you be blessed with happiness.
