Rule 2- Change in Tense
Only 3rd form of verb or Past Participle will be used
as a main verb in Passive Voice
By is used in the Passive Voice when the actor
needs to know the job.
The sentences of the following Tenses can’t be changed
to Passive Voice :
• Present Perfect Continuous
• Past Perfect Continuous
• Future Continuous
• Future Perfect Continuous
• Sentences having Intransitive Verbs(a verb that
doesn’t take a direct object i.e. never followed by a
noun)
Example- She grew up.
She grew up to be a farmer.(Prepositional phrase)
Prepositional phase-Made up of preposition and object
Examples- Around the world, near the ocean etc.
Sentences which cannot be changed in
passive voice
Intransitive Verb- A sentence which does not
have a direct Object
Example-
He laughs
They sleep
Transitive verb – has a direct object

I go to school.
Prepositional Phase
I attend the school. School is attended by me.
Everyone clapped when the speaker
finished.
Today we will go over the material
we learned yesterday.
Phrasal verb
She sneezes in class.
Voice using Modals
Passive voice for May have , Might have , Should have, Must have ,
Ought to have
Verbs followed by
Modals(Can ,Could ,May ,Might ,Would ,Should ,Ought -Modal Auxiliary
+ be + Third form of Verb)
Imperative Sentence- A sentence that expresses a
command, or a request or an advice is called an Imperative
Sentence
Characteristics-
Structure-Let+ object+ Be/Not be +V3
Sentences which express Request , Order, Advice phrases
such as You are requested to, advices to, ordered to are
used.
Words kindly/please are dropped.
Change the sentences into Passive voice:
1.People speak Portuguese in Brazil.
2. A friend gave me this sweater.
3. A knock at the door woke us all up.
4. He wore a blue shirt.
5. May God bless you with happiness.
1. Portuguese is spoken in Brazil.
2. This sweater was given to me by a friend.
