BOWLING
refers to a series of sports or
leisure activities in which a player
rolls or throws a bowling ball
towards a target.
OBJECTIVE
Players try to score points by

rolling a bowling ball down a
flat lane in attempts to knock
over objects called pins.
TYPES OF BOWLING
 Ten-pin bowling: largest and
heaviest pins, and bowled with
a large ball with three finger
holes, and the most popular size
in North America
 Nine-pin bowling: pins usually
attached to strings at the tops,
uses a ball without finger holes.
 Candlepin bowling: tallest pins, thin
with matching ends, and bowled with
the smallest and lightest (at 1.1 kg)
handheld ball of any bowling sport.
 Duckpin bowling: short, squat, and
bowled with a handheld ball.
 Five-pin bowling: tall, between
duckpins and candlepins in diameter
with a rubber girdle, bowled with a
handheld ball, mostly found in
Canada.
BOWLING RULES
 A bowling lane is 62 ft. 10 in long, and
41.5 in wide, with gutters on either side.
 At the end of the lane there are ten pins set
up in four rows making up an equilateral
triangle.
 A game of bowling consists of ten frames.
 During each frame bowlers are given two
opportunities to bowl the ball down the
lane and knock down the pins to score
points.
 If a player knocks down all of the pins with their
first ball of a frame, the frame is over and they
receive a "strike”, denoted by an "X" on the
score sheet.
 If they do not knock down all of the pins they
bowl their second ball.
 If a player knocks down all of their pins with
their second ball they receive a "spare”, denoted
by a diagonal line “/”.
 Players keep score by recording and adding up
the number of pins they knock down in each
frame.
 A player who earns a "strike," is
awarded ten points, plus a bonus
of whatever is scored with the
next two balls in the following
frame.
 A player who earns a "spare," is
awarded ten points, plus a bonus
of whatever is scored with the
first ball of the next frame.
 If the bowler
knocks down all
ten pins in the tenth
frame, the bowler
is allowed to throw
a third ball for that
frame.

Rules and Scoring
A game or line of bowling for an individual consists of ten frames. The bowler has ten frames, rolling one or two
balls, to knock down all ten pins in each frame. Bonuses are awarded for getting a strike or a spare. The game score
is the total number of pins knocked down in the ten frames plus bonuses.

• Strike: All pins knocked down with the first ball.
7 • Spare: All pins knocked down in two attempts. Figure indicates that
seven pins were knocked down by first ball. On the second ball the
remaining 3 pins were knocked down.

• Miss: Failure to strike or spare.
8 • Split: After first ball, the headpin is down and two or more pins remain
standing with no intermediate pins in front or between. In this example,
the split was converted with the second ball.
F • Foul: A part of the bowler's body touches any part of the lane,
equipment, or building beyond the foul line during or after delivery.
When a player fouls, no score is allowed on that ball and the pins are
reset (similar to losing a turn). If the foul occurs on the 2nd try, the

7 2 • Strike. A strike is worth 10 pins plus the value of the next two

6 5 • Spare. Ten plus a bonus of the pins knocked down on the first ball

spare, plus 5 on the next ball for a total score of 15 in the first
frame, the score for the second frame is 5+0 (equals 5) plus the first
frame score of 15 (equals 20).
7 1 • Tenth frame. If a spare occurs in the tenth frame, the bowler is

152 entitled to roll one more ball. If a strike occurs in the tenth frame,
the bowler is entitled to two additional rolls to finish the game.
