DESIGN A VIRTUAL

CLASSROOM

WEEK 2 – E-LEARNING IN LANGUAGE TEACHING

1
CREATE A VIRTUAL CLASSROOM
Why do we need a virtual classroom?

2
WHY VIRTUAL CLASSROOM

▰ Virtual classroom requires a teacher to lead learners through the subject

▰ Benefits over standalone or learner-led courses:
▻ Adapt to learners
▻ Provide community and disciplines
▻ Similar to traditional classroom
▻ Flexible and active

3
WEBINARS AND VIRTUAL CLASSROOM COURSES

▰ Webinars: individual online meetings.

▻ Center on a presentation including opportunities to ask questions.
▻ Involve group activities during the meeting.
▻ Tend to be informal and lightly structured.
▻ Seldom graded rigorously
▻ Seem like “virtual conference room” meetings

4
WEBINARS AND VIRTUAL CLASSROOM COURSES

▰ Virtual-classroom course: complete programs of learning including

asynchronous & synchronous events.
▻ Synchronous: online meetings, online presentation, Q&A, individual and
group activities
▻ Asynchronous: discussions, activities between meetings
▻ Typically have the formal structure and rigorous grading

5

homework, discussions,
activities

6
DECIDE WHETHER YOU NEED A LIVE MEETING

No Yes
Teaching explicit knowledge Teaching unstructured, implicit
knowledge
Content requires detailed study Learners have many questions
Leaners lack language skills Isolated leaners prefer learning with
others
Learners have unpredictable No time to develop standalone
schedule materials

Laziness on the part of the designer is not a good reason for a meeting. 7

SELECT AND USE
COLLABORATION TOOLS
Computer and network technologies
provide a wide range of tools
8
SELECT YOUR COLLABORATION TOOLS

▰ Ensure human interaction

for learners
▰ Link teacher and individual
learners or groups of
learners

9
SELECT YOUR COLLABORATION TOOLS

Factors in choosing collaboration tools

▰ Language fluency: Some requires greater than others
▰ Accents: Difficulties for speakers with a distinct accent
▰ Typing skill: Live chatting  email or forum discussion  audio-
conferencing discussion
▰ Technical expertise: How comfortable learners are with computer and network
technologies.

10
ENABLE INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION

Different
degrees of
communication
require
different media

11
SLIDE SHOWS

Learners watch slides on their

computers or mobile devices

12
WHEN TO USE SLIDE SHOWS

▰ Content changing: based on learners’ responses to previous activities

▰ Showing visual examples
▰ Overview of a subject area or previews of a collaborative activities
▰ Briefing learners who have not learned.
 Unless having good reasons for a live presentation, record it and let learners
take it at their convenience

13
BEST PRACTICES FOR USING SLIDE SHOWS

▰ Keep slides simple and visual: Include meaningful animation.

▰ Keep text legible. Make sure learners with vision difficulties can read.
▰ Include some interactivity: Poll, whiteboard, etc.
▰ Use whiteboard feature: Write and draw, fill in blacks, check off answers,
complete drawings
▰ Test your slides beforehand
▰ Record the presentation: Make it available to those who cannot attend or need
to review

14
BREAKOUT ROOMS

▰ Small groups of learners conduct their

own meetings
▰ Teacher may drop in on individual
meetings

15
BREAKOUT ROOMS

▰ Breakout rooms for:

▻ Teamwork and small-group projects
▻ Problem solving
▻ Brainstorming
▻ Team design
▻ Preparation for debates
▰Do not use breakout rooms in one-time
meetings or short courses.
16
3
CONDUCT ONLINE
MEETINGS
Chat, virtual polls, whiteboards,
application sharing, and more
17
PLAN THE MEETING

▰Decide roles: learners, teacher, guests, etc. Who will lead, listen, answer,
summarize, evaluate the event.
▰Schedule the meeting: Pick the best day of the week (e.g. Tuesday), best time of
the day (9 a.m. or later). Avoid sleep time if possible
▰Set the meeting length: Best length from 60 to 90 minutes, no more than 2 hours
including 5 to 10 minutes breaks.

18
PREPARE LEARNERS FOR THE MEETING

▰Inform learners: Give them fair warning, ensure they have time to prepare for
the meeting.
▻ Goals and objectives of the meeting
▻ Survey to know who will attend and what they need
▻ Biography of the teacher and guest speakers
▻ Tell learners how to set up their computers
▻ Publish standards of behavior

19
PREPARE LEARNERS FOR THE MEETING

▰Make pre-meeting assignments: Give learners an assignment to complete before

the live session. Begin with a discussion. Reward learners completing or well-
prepared
▰Send related information: Learners need to review and think of questions to ask
▻ Handouts to take notes
▻ Reports, white papers, etc.
▻ Biographies of the speakers

20
PREPARE LEARNERS FOR THE MEETING

▰Introduce participants. Have them send or post biographies before the meeting.

21
PLAN FOLLOW-UP ACTIVTITIES

End the meeting with a strong, memorable activity. Then perform the follow-up
work:
▰Gather learners’ feedback with poll
▰Post reference materials to a discussion forum with the recording of the meeting
▰Publish revised handouts

22
SETUP WORKSTATION

▰Run your presentation on a powerful

computer
▰Monitor your presentation from a
secondary computer
▰Wear comfortable clothes
▰Keep emergency supplies near. These
include tissues, water, a phone with tech
support number ready

23
ANNOUNCE THE MEETING

▰Purpose. What exactly will learners get attending the event?

▰Time. When to begin? How long? How early to log in?
▰Procedure. How to join? ID, passwords?
▰Requirement. Is it mandatory or optional? Grade?
▰Learning preparation. What to do before the event?
▰Computer setup. How to configure? Any software? Sample files?
▰Tools to be used. Any technologies to learn before the event?

24
3
MANAGE THE LIVE
ONLINE MEETING
It’ show time. You are ready to go

25
MANAGE THE EVENT

▰Keep learners active. Make dynamic presentations by visuals or other media.

Explain any pauses over 5 seconds.
▰Interact frequently. Spend 40 to 60% time interacting. Ask questions every 15 to
20 minutes
▰Call on learners by name. Have a list of names of all participants
▰Ask more questions than you answer. When a learner ask you, ask the learner a
question to test if he or she understood your answer
▰Be spontaneous. Leave 30 to 40% of the time to answer unanticipated questions
or go into more detail of issues that interest learners.
▰Keep a back channel open. Find ways to test if your message
26
is getting through

SlidesCarnival icons are editable shapes.

This means that you can:

● Resize them without losing quality.
● Change line color, width and style.

Isn’t that nice? :)

Examples:

52
Now you can use any emoji as an icon!
And of course it resizes without losing quality and you can change the color.
