    Introduction of Diameter protocol
    • Diameter is application layer protocols that provides Authentication, Authorization, and
    Accounting (AAA) services.

    • Diameter is a message based protocol, where AAA  nodes exchange messages and receive Positive or
    Negative acknowledgment for each message exchanged between nodes.

    • Designed as peer to peer architecture with


    binary coded protocol

    • It uses TCP and SCTP instead of UDP.

    • Evolved from RADIUS protocol but not


    backward compatible, only upgrade path is there.

    • Used in IMS system,4G/5G networks

    • used to deliver policy control. Policy control allows a service provider to better control services and revenues. Ex:
    Guaranteed Bit Rate (GBR) and Quality of Service (QoS).

    Working principle
    •  The diameter node that receives the user connection
    request is referred to as the client.

    • The diameter node that processes the request is referred to


    as the server
    • Intermediary nodes are referred to as agents.  The
    protocol defines four distinct agent types: proxy,
    redirect, relay, and translation.
    Function of agent:
    •Provide load balancing for scalability and reliability

    •Aggregate, concentrate, sort and forward requests

    •Enable interworking with legacy AAA protocols

    •Mitigate multivendor interoperability issues


    Advantages of Diameter protocol
    •A peer-to-peer architecture for greater flexibility

    •Fault tolerance to guarantee message delivery

    •Agent support to clearly define proxy, redirect, relay, or translation agents

    •Reliable transmission over TCP or SCTP

    •Application layer acknowledgements; Diameter defines failover methods
