Unit 1- Introduction to

AI
Foundational concepts of AI
Class X
Learning Objective
• What is Intelligence
• Decision Making
 How do you make your decisions?
 Make your choices
• How do Machines become Artificially Intelligent?
• What is Artificial Intelligence and what is NOT?
• Application of AI around us
What is Intelligence

• A person is said to be intelligent when he has a capability to think, to learn from

experience to make decision, to solve problems.
• Intelligence is an ability to perceive or infer information and to retain it as
knowledge to be applied towards adaptive behaviors within an environment or
context.
What is Intelligence
• Intelligence is based on the following parameters:-
Learning from experience
Identifying Problems
Problem Solving
Ability to make Accurate decision
Ability to prove the outcome
Ability to think logically
Ability to learn and improve
Multiple Intelligences
Decision Making

• The basis of decision making depends upon the availability of

information(past experience, intuition, knowledge and self awareness)
and how we understand it.

• We can not make “good” decision without information because then we

have to deal with unknown factors and face uncertainty, which leads us to
make wild guesses, flipping coins or rolling dice.
Decision Making

• Having knowledge, experience or insights given a certain situation ,helps

us visualize what the outcomes could be and how we can achieve/avoid
those outcomes.

• Decision making is the process of making choices by identifying a

problem and assessing alternative solution.

Make your Choices

Make your Choices
Scenario :1

Decision Making
Make your Choices
Scenario :2
• Aarti invited four of her friends to her House.
• They hadn't seen each other in a long time, so they chatted all night
long and had a good time.
• In the morning, two of the friends Aarti had invited, died.
• The police arrived at the house and found that both the friends were
poisoned and that the poison was in the strawberry pie.
• The three surviving friends told the police that they hadn't eaten the
pie.
Decision Making
Make your Choices
Scenario :2
• The police asked," Why didn’t you eat the pie ?".
• Shiv said, " I am allergic to strawberries.".
• Seema said, " I am on a diet.”
• Aarti said, "I ate too many strawberries while cooking the pie, I just
didn't want anymore.”
• The policemen looked at the pictures of the party and immediately
identified the murderer. Who is the murderer and why?

How do Machines become Artificially
Intelligent?

• How did we learn to speak and write any language? (training)

• How did we learn to walk? (experience)
• Similarly ,machines also become intelligent once they are trained with some
information(data) which helps them to achieve their tasks.
• AI machines also keep updating their knowledge to optimize their
output(concepts of experience comes here).
What is Artificial Intelligence and what is
NOT?
Remember This

• Any Machine that has been trained with data and can make
decisions/prediction on its own can be termed as AI.
• Any machine should be capable of itself to take decisions and
actions in any situations(Without any human intervention).
What is NOT Artificial Intelligence
(Misconception)
Ex.
• Fully Automatic Washing Machine
• AC turned ON/OFF remotely with the help of internet.
• Smart TV
• Line follower robot/obstacle avoidance robot
What is Artificial Intelligence
Applications

• Search Algorithms
What is Artificial Intelligence
Applications

• Text editors on autocorrect and autocomplete

• Amazon’s Alexa
• Google Maps and Ride-hailing Application
• AI enhanced games(sports FIFA)
• Recommendation system like
(Netflix,Amazon,youtube,Facebook,Instragram)
What is Artificial Intelligence
Applications

• Humanoids-Sophia
The very first humanoid robot
Sophisticated enough to get citizenship, biometric security system
like the face locks we have in our phones.
What is Artificial Intelligence
• The term AI was first used in 1956 at Dartmouth Conference by JohnCarthy.
• AI refers to the simulation of human intelligence in machines that are
programmed to think like humans and mimic their actions.
