The document discusses electronic fuel injection systems and their advantages over carbureted systems. It describes how EFI systems can precisely control air-fuel ratios across all engine speeds for improved emissions and fuel economy. It then outlines the basic components of a Toyota EFI system, including the air induction system, throttle body, fuel system, and electronic control unit. Key fuel system components like the fuel pump, pressure regulator, injectors, and cold start injector are also summarized.

ELECTRONIC FUEL INJECTION
SYSTEM Compared to the carburetor, EFI has the following advantages:
1. A uniform air-fuel mixture to each cylinder is possible (b/c each cylinder
has its own injector) – Emission & power performance 2. Accurate air-fuel ratio can be obtained throughout all engine rpm ranges – Emission & fuel economy 3. Good response in relation to changes in throttle angle (delivering fuel directly at the back of the intake valve 4. Corrections of air-fuel mixture (low temperature compensation, and Deceleration fuel cut-off)
5. Efficient intake of air-fuel mixture
• No need for a venturi anfd no restriction in air flow TYPES OF EFI SYSTEMS
• EFI systems can be broadly divided
into two types, according to the method used in sensing the amount of intake air. 1. D-EFI System (Manifold Pressure Control Type 2. L-EFI (Airflow Control Type) System Basic EFI system configuration
Air induction Electronic control
Fuel system system system AIR INDUCTION SYSTEM (TOYOTA) Air valve • Controls idle speed when the engine is cold THROTTLE BODY AIR VALVE I. Wax type OPERATION II. Bi-metal type Air valve continued FUEL SYSTEM COMPONENTS FUNCTION AND CONSTRUCTION (TOYOTA) • Multi-Point Injction (Each Cylinder has ist own Injector) • Single-Point Injection (Found on the Throttle Body Fuel pump • There are two types of fuel pump, the in-tank type and the in-line type.
IN-TANK TYPE FUEL PUMP
Fuel pump Control • most fuel pump in a vehicle equipped with an EFI engine operates when the engine is running.
• This is to prevent fuel from being pumped to
the engine when the ignition switch is on but the engine is stopped. Fuel Pump control types a. ON-OFF control (by Engine ECU) For D-EFI system and L-type with optical Karman vortex type air flow meter or hot-wire type air flow meter
b. ON-OFF control (by fuel pump switch at the
air flow meter) (Flap type air flow meter)
c. ON-OFF control with fuel pump speed control
ON-OFF control (by Engine ECU) ON-OFF control (by fuel pump switch at the air flow meter) Valves inside the pump Discuss about: Relief valve: Check valve PULSATION DAMPERS •Absorbs variations in fuel pressure by means of a diaphragm •The Pressure fluctuates due to injection. FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR • The pressure regulator regulates the fuel pressure to the injectors. • Fuel injection quantity is controlled by the duration of the signal applied to the injectors. Therefore, a constant pressure must be maintained to the injectors. OPERATION: INJECTORS COLD START INJECTOR found in the center of the Intake chamber Cold start injector electrical circuitry If the starter motor is cranked for a prolonged period
