DANCE DURING THE PREHISTORIC PERIOD.

Early Dance History: Prehistoric Times In its earliest

forms, dance was often a celebration or ceremony. For
example, hunters would dance both before and after a
hunt. First to appease the gods for the animals they
would be killing, and later to celebrate their success.
DANCE DURING THE ANCIENT CIVILIZATION

Dance is traced all the way back to the ancient

civilizations of India, Greece, and China. Although
each dance varies based on the culture, the reasons are
similar: to tell a story or portray an important message,
typically religious. Dance was influenced by
significant human developmental milestones, such as
the development of language, writing, and certain
agricultural and governmental tools. Societal structure
impacted the way in which the dance was performed,
as well. Now let's take a closer look at these specific
ancient dances.
ANCIENT EGYPT

Dancing played a vital role in the lives of the ancient

Egyptians. However, men and women are never depicted
dancing together. The trf was a dance performed by a pair of
men during the Old Kingdom. Dance groups were accessible to
perform at dinner parties, banquets, lodging houses, and even
religious temples.
ANCIENT CRETE

The Cretan dances are divided into two large groups, the quick
(“pidichtoi”) and the round (“sirtoi”). The quick dances remind
war dances especially if they are danced by men. The round
dances are more popular in marriages while, in the ancient times,
were danced by the Minoans during sacrifices
ANCIENT GREECE

In Ancient Greece, dance was a form of ritual, as well as a

pastime. Dance could be included in hunting communities,
initiation ceremony rituals of age, marriage, and death,
entertainment, dance festivals, and religious activity.
ANCIENT ROME

There is one particular Roman dance that was considered to be

a native dance, this was called the bellicrepa. The bellicrepa is
thought to have been created by Romulus, the founder of
Rome.
DANCE DURING THE MIDDLE AGE
AND RENAISSANCE

They range from slow, stately dances

(bassadance, pavane, almain) to fast, lively
dances (galliard, coranto, canario). The former,
in which the dancers' feet did not leave the
ground were styled the dance basse while
energetic dances with leaps and lifts were
called the haute dance.
VAST DANCE (COURT OF THE EUROPE IN THE 15TH AND 16TH
CENTURY

Despite the chronological limits given above, the Early

Renaissance period of dance is commonly referred to by dancers
as '15th century' and the Late Renaissance period of dance as
'16th century'. In the UK, we find Tudor dance, Elizabethan dance
and Jacobean dance developing during these centuries.
