1. word formation (noun) – the ways in which new words are


made on the basis of other words
It is quite amazing that new words are constantly being formed
through the different types of word formation.
2. diachronic (adjective) – through different periods in history
Melanie’s thesis studies Filipino word formation diachronically.
3. synchronic (adjective) – at one particular period in time
Newspapers are, more often than not, synchronic.

4. cybernetics (noun) - the scientific study of how machines,


animals, and people convey information

Types of Word Formation


Affixation or Derivation – the process of adding an
affix to a word to create a different form of that word or
a new word with a different meaning

Examples:
We need to use fungicide for the newly planted banana
seedlings.
The city is in hypercritical status because of the lack of water.

Coinage – the invention of totally new terms. Invented
trade names are typical examples.

Examples:
I am a noob in this game, so please forgive my mistakes.
An international organization will hold a webinar for five days.

Borrowing – the process of taking words from other
languages

Examples:
Croissant is by far my favorite bread.
She loves to listen to songs of different genres.
I like singing karaoke even though I do not have a good voice.

Compounding – refers to the process of joining two or
more independent words to produce a new form

Examples:
Carlo needs to use a sandpaper smoothen the wood.
My sister will bake a delicious cupcake tonight.
Jerry will try a new hairstyle for the party.

Blending – a process of creating a new word by
combining the parts of two different words, usually the
beginning of one word and the end of another

Examples:
It is feared that there will be human cyborgs by 2050.
You do not want to argue with a person who is very hangry.
My aunt is really fond of using cute emoticons.

Clipping – involves reduction of syllables in a word.
New words are created by shortening parts of a longer
word.

Examples:
I despise seeing even just a single roach.
Have you ever wondered why a lot of people hate math?

Backformation – another special kind of reduction
where a word of one type (may be a noun) is reduced to
another word of another type (may be a verb)

Examples:
The government needs to bulldoze the cliff.
I need to babysit my younger sister this weekend.
My grandfather was diagnosed with liver cancer.

Conversion or Functional Shift – new words are often
formed by changing an existing word from one part of
speech to another

Examples:
You should access the website to submit the file.
You should black your hair back.
There is an increase in the number of enrollees.
The rich are blessed with more opportunities.

Acronymy – New words are formed from the initial
letters of a set of words.

Examples:
The DOST will hold a five-day seminar about technology
innovation.
PAGASA will announce whether or not there will be classes next
week.

Folk Etymology – refers to the changing of a word or a
phrase over time which results from the replacement of
an unfamiliar form by a more familiar one

Example:

We should bring a hammock for the camping.

Reduplication – a process of forming new words by
word (total reduplication) or part of a word (partial
reduplication)

Examples:
The theater play was a super-duper tearjerker.
I bought a teeny-weeny box for my ring.
I lost my flip-flops on the beach.

Echoism or Onomatopoeia – in this type, new words
are formed by imitating sounds

Example:
The screeching of the car’s tires was heard inside the house.
