Principles of Family Medicine

By
Besigye Kabahena Innocent
MBChB, Mmed (Family Medicine)
Introduction
• There 10 principles of Family Medicine
• 9 were written by Ian McWhinnney a
Canadian-based Family Physician
• 10th Principle was contextually added to
emphasise the breadth of Family Medicine
that requires continuous learning
Principle 1

Family physicians are committed to the person

rather than to a particular body of knowledge,
group of diseases or special technique
Principle 2

Family physician seeks to understand the

context of the illness. Any illness cannot be
understood unless it is seen in personal,
family and social/community context
Principle 3

The Family Physician sees every contact with

his/her patients as an opportunity for disease
prevention or health promotion
Principle 4
A Family Physician views his/her practice as a
population as a “population at risk”. Clinicians
think normally in terms of single patients
rather than population groups
Principle 5

A Family Physician sees himself or herself as

part of the community-wide network of
supportive and health care agencies
Principle 6

Ideally, family physicians should share the

same habitat as their patients
Principle 7

A family physician sees patients in their homes

Principle 8

A family physician attaches importance to the

subjective aspects of medicine
Principle 9

A family physician is a manager of resources

Principle 10

A family physician is a life long learner

Conclusion
• These principles are not exclusively unique to
family medicine.
• They are just more emphasized in family
medicine
• Together, these principles form a world view
through which family medicine is practiced.
