• What is poison ?
 a poison is any substance that is harmful to
your body.
 You might swallow it, inhale it, inject it, or
absorb it through your skin.
 Any substance can be poisonous if too much Is
taken .
CAUSES
Items that can cause poisoning include :
• Carbon monoxide gas (from furnaces , gas
engines, fires , space heaters)
• Certain foods ( undercooked non – veg items,
unpasteurised dairy, uncooked rice , expiry
date food items, etc.)
• Overdose of illegal drugs ( cocaine – a
stimulant, psilocybin – hallucinogens , etc.)
.
• Prescribed drugs ( such as aspirin overdose)
• House hold detergents and cleaning
products(bleach , phenyl ,etc.)
• Outdoor plants ( poison oak, daffodils , etc)
Carbon monoxide poisoning
• frequent sources of carbon monoxide
poisoning (CO) gas are engines , fires,
furnaces, and space heaters, especially in
badly ventilated spaces .
Actions[ First aid for co poisoning]

• Calm and rescue the victim


• Move the victim out of the area with gas but only if
this can be done without endangering the first aid
providers
• Move the victim to fresh air
• if the victim is not breathing then immediately begin
CPT and ask the assistant to call the emergency.
• Continue CPR until the victim begins breathing or
emergency help arrives
Aspirin poisoning
• Aspirin poisoning is also called acetylsalicyclic
acid.
• Most common pain reliever drug

Causes of aspirin poisoning


1) Intentional causes
2) Un – intentional causes
Types of causes
• Intentional cause – this is found in cases
where a person consume it for committing
suicide
• Accidental cause – when the drug / first aid kit
at home is in reach of the child , the child can
easily consume it.
Symptoms.
First aid for aspirin poisoning
• Check the condition of the victim
• Collect the history of over dose
• Check the level of consciousness
• If conscious or breathing let the victim vomit or
induce vomit and produce recovery position
• If conscious check the victims airway breathing
and pulse . Never induce vomit n an unconcius
victim rather start CPR.
Food poisoning
• Food poisoning occurs when a person
consume food or drinks that may be
contaminated with virus, bacteria, parasites or
toxins that are harmful for the body.
• food contamination can occur while the food
is being produced, processed, not cooked and
handled properly.
First aid for food poisoning
• Check the victim for response
• Check history asking the details of food consumed
• Control nausea and vomiting if possible
• Prevent the victim from dehydration ( give oral
rehydration or get one from pharmacy)
• Keep checking the pulse and respiration until the
ambulance arrives
• Shift to the hospital
