Domain of
It is found that there is a difference in terms of domain.
Each of the social media users tends to use different
language in different contexts. English are used in self-
language
expression, workplace, community, home/family, and
public space domains. On the other hand, it is also
found that some users use Indonesian in self-
expression, workplace, home/family, and public space
use domains.

• Fasold (as cited in Purba, n.d.) points out that
language shift is affected by bilingualism.
• Often marked by intergenerational switching of
the language.
• However bilingualism may be not influenced the
language shift phenomenon (Masruddin, 2013).
Migration
• People who migrate to a new environment where
their language is no longer serves them
(Masruddin, 2013).
• E.g. Niki Zefanya and Brian Imanuel, Indonesian
celebrities who moves and lives in the U.S.
Social and Economic Factors
• Holmes (2013) stated that one of the factors
contributing language shift is economic and social
factors.
• Economic factors: Promoting products to broader
audiences, including international audiences.
• Social Factors: Interaction between fans and celebrities
through the comment section.
