TWO VARIABLES
SOLVING SYSTEMS OF LINEAR
EQUATIONS IN TWO
VARIABLES:

WHEN YOU HAVE TWO EQUATIONS, EACH

WITH X AND Y, AND YOU FIGURE OUT
ONE VALUE FOR X AND ONE VALUE FOR Y
THAT WILL MAKE BOTH EQUATIONS TRUE.
A system of equations is a collection of two or
more equations, each containing one or more
variables.
A solution of a system of equations consists of
values for the variables that reduce each equation
of the system to a true statement.
To solve a system of equations means to find all
solutions of the system.
When a system of equations has at least one solution, it is
said to be consistent; otherwise it is called inconsistent.
If each equation in a system of equations
is linear, then we have a system of
linear equations.
Kind of System of Linear Equation
in Two Variables according to the SYSTEM OF CONSISTENT
number of solutions AND INDEPENDENT
EQUATIONS.
If the graph of the
lines in a system
y of two linear
equations in two
variables intersect,
Solution then the system of
equations has one
solution, given by
the point of
x intersection.
SYSTEM OF INCONSISTENT EQUATIONS
If the graph of the lines in a system
of two linear equations in two
variables are parallel, then the
y system of equations has no
solution, because the lines never
intersect..

x
THE SYSTEM IS CONSISTENT AND DEPENDENT.

If the graph of the lines in a system of

two linear equations in two variables
are coincident, then the system of
y equations has infinitely many
solutions, represented by the totality of
points on the line.

SOLVING SYSTEM OF LINEAR EQUATION
BY ELIMINATION METHOD
Solving Systems of Equations by
Elimination
Step 1 Write the system so that like
terms are aligned.
Eliminate one of the variables and
Step 2
solve for the other variable.
Substitute the value of the variable
Step 3 into one of the original equations
and solve for the other variable.
Write the answers from Steps 2 and 3
Step 4 as an ordered pair, (x, y), and check.
Example: Elimination Using Addition

3x – 4y = 10
Solve by elimination.
x + 4y = –2

Step 1 3x – 4y = 10
x + 4y = –2
Step 2 4x + 0 = 8

4x = 8
4x = 8
4 4
x=2
Example Continued

Step 3 x + 4y = –2 Write one of the original

equations.
2 + 4y = –2 Substitute 2 for x.
–2 –2 Subtract 2 from both sides.
4y = –4
4y –4
4 4
y = –1
Step 4 (2, –1)
Example

y + 3x = –2
Solve by elimination.
2y – 3x = 14

Step 1 y + 3x = –2
2y – 3x = 14
Step 2 3y + 0 = 12
3y = 12

y=4
Example Continued

Step 3 y + 3x = –2 Write one of the original

equations.
4 + 3x = –2 Substitute 4 for y.
–4 –4 Subtract 4 from both sides.
3x = –6
3x = –6
3 3
x = –2
Step 4 (–2, 4)
Example: Elimination Using Subtraction

Solve 2x + y = –5 by elimination.
2x – 5y = 13

Step 1 2x + y = –5
–(2x – 5y = 13)
2x + y = –5
–2x + 5y = –13
Step 2 0 + 6y = –18 Eliminate x.
6y = –18
y = –3
Example Continued

Step 3 2x + y = –5 Write one of the original

equations.
2x + (–3) = –5
Substitute –3 for y.
2x – 3 = –5
+3 +3
2x = –2
x = –1
Step 4 (–1, –3)
In some cases, you will first need to
multiply one or both of the equations by
a number so that one variable has
opposite coefficients.
Example: Elimination Using Multiplication First
Solve the system by elimination.
x + 2y = 11
–3x + y = –5

Step 1 x + 2y = 11 Multiply each term in the

–2(–3x + y = –5) second equation by –2 to
get opposite y-coefficients.
x + 2y = 11
+(6x –2y = +10)
7x + 0 = 21
Step 2 7x = 21
Solve for x.
x=3
Example Continued

Write one of the original

Step 3 x + 2y = 11
equations.
3 + 2y = 11 Substitute 3 for x.
–3 –3 Subtract 3 from both sides.
2y = 8
y=4
Step 4 (3, 4)
SOLVING A SYSTEM OF EQUATIONS BY
SUBSTITUTION METHOD

Step 1: Solve an equation for one Pick the easier equation. The goal
variable. is to get y= ; x= ; a= ; etc.

Put the equation solved in Step 1

Step 2: Substitute
into the other equation.

Step 3: Solve the equation. Get the variable by itself.

Step 4: Plug back in to find Substitute the value of the variable

the other variable. into the equation.

Step 5: Check your Substitute your ordered pair into

solution. BOTH equations.
1) SOLVE THE SYSTEM USING
SUBSTITUTION
x+y=5
y=3+x

Step 1: Solve an equation The second equation is

for one variable. already solved for y!

x+y=5
Step 2: Substitute
x + (3 + x) = 5

2x + 3 = 5
Step 3: Solve the equation. 2x = 2
x=1
1) SOLVE THE SYSTEM USING
SUBSTITUTION
x+y=5
y=3+x

x+y=5
Step 4: Plug back in to find
the other variable. (1) + y = 5
y=4
(1, 4)
Step 5: Check your
solution.
(1) + (4) = 5
(4) = 3 + (1)

The solution is (1, 4).

2) SOLVE THE SYSTEM USING
SUBSTITUTION
3y + x = 7
4x – 2y = 0

It is easiest to solve the

first equation for x.
Step 1: Solve an equation 3y + x = 7
for one variable.
-3y -3y
x = -3y + 7

4x – 2y = 0
Step 2: Substitute
4(-3y + 7) – 2y = 0
2) SOLVE THE SYSTEM USING
SUBSTITUTION
3y + x = 7
4x – 2y = 0

-12y + 28 – 2y = 0
-14y + 28 = 0
Step 3: Solve the equation.
-14y = -28
y=2
4x – 2y = 0
4x – 2(2) = 0
Step 4: Plug back in to find
4x – 4 = 0
the other variable.
4x = 4
x=1
2) SOLVE THE SYSTEM USING
SUBSTITUTION
3y + x = 7
4x – 2y = 0

Step 5: Check your (1, 2)

solution. 3(2) + (1) = 7
4(1) – 2(2) = 0
3) SOLVE THE SYSTEM USING
SUBSTITUTION
x=3–y
x+y=7
Step 1: Solve an equation The first equation is
for one variable. already solved for x!

x+y=7
Step 2: Substitute
(3 – y) + y = 7

3=7
The variables were eliminated!!
Step 3: Solve the equation.
This is a special case.
Does 3 = 7? FALSE!

When the result is FALSE, the answer is NO SOLUTIONS.

3) SOLVE THE SYSTEM USING
SUBSTITUTION
2x + y = 4
4x + 2y = 8
Step 1: Solve an equation The first equation is
for one variable. easiest to solved for y!
y = -2x + 4

4x + 2y = 8
Step 2: Substitute 4x + 2(-2x + 4) = 8

4x – 4x + 8 = 8
Step 3: Solve the equation. 8=8
This is also a special case.
Does 8 = 8? TRUE!

When the result is TRUE, the answer is INFINITELY MANY SOLUTIONS.
