Cloud Computing Service Models

This document summarizes the three main service models of cloud computing: Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), and Software as a Service (SaaS). IaaS provides on-demand access to virtualized computing infrastructure over the internet. PaaS provides a cloud-based platform for developing, running, and managing applications. SaaS provides ready-to-use application software that users access via a web browser or mobile app. The document also briefly discusses virtual machines and examples of virtual machine platforms.

CLOUD COMPUTING SERVICE MODELS

• What are cloud computing services models?

Cloud computing services come mainly in three types of service models: SaaS (Software as a Service), IaaS
(Infrastructure as a Service), and PaaS (Platform as a Service). Each of the cloud models has its own set of
benefits that could serve the needs of various businesses.

• What are the 3 service models of cloud computing?

IaaS, PaaS and SaaS are the three most popular types of cloud service offerings.

• IaaS
IaaS is on-demand access to cloud-hosted computing infrastructure - servers, storage capacity and
networking resources - that customers can provision, configure and use in much the same way as
they use on-premises hardware. The difference is that the cloud service provider hosts, manages
and maintains the hardware and computing resources in its own data centers. IaaS customers use
the hardware via an internet connection, and pay for that use on a subscription or pay-as-you-
go basis.
• PaaS
PaaS provides a cloud-based platform for developing, running, managing applications.  The cloud
services provider hosts, manages and maintains all the hardware and software included in the
platform - servers (for development, testing and deployment), operating system (OS) software,
storage, networking, databases, middleware, runtimes, frameworks, development tools - as well as
related services for security, operating system and software upgrades, backups and more.

• SaaS
SaaS (sometimes called cloud application services) is cloud-hosted, ready-to-use application
software. Users pay a monthly or annual fee to use a complete application from within a web
browser, desktop client or mobile app. The application and all of the infrastructure required to
deliver it - servers, storage, networking, middleware, application software, data storage - are hosted
and managed by the SaaS vendor.
• What is one of the 4 categories of service models for cloud computing?

Cloud Computing Services:

Infrastructure as a Service. (IaaS)
Platform as a Service. (PaaS)
Software as a Service. (SaaS)
Functions as a Service.
• What is a virtual machine?
A Virtual Machine (VM) is a compute resource that uses software instead of a physical computer to
run programs and deploy apps. One or more virtual “guest” machines run on a physical “host” machine.  Each virtual
machine runs its own operating system and functions separately from the other VMs, even when they are
all running on the same host.

• What is virtual machine used for?

Virtual machines are best for running multiple applications together, monolithic applications, isolation
between apps, and for legacy apps running on older operating systems. Containers and virtual
machines may also be used together.

• What is an example of a virtual machine?

• Examples of process VMs include the Java Virtual Machine, the . NET
Framework and the Parrot virtual machine. System VMs rely on hypervisors as
a go-between that give software access to the hardware resources.
