Definition
 It is a viral infection disease caused by the hepatitis C virus (HCV) that
primarily affects the liver (Hepatocytophilic).
 the virus can cause both acute and chronic hepatitis.

Etiology
Hepatitis C is a blood borne infection and is caused by the hepatitis C virus (HCV).
HCV can be transmitted by:

• Needle stick injuries in healthcare.

• Direct contact with infected blood or any body fluids.

• I.V. injection abuse.

• Sexual contact.

• Blood transfusions.

• Pregnancy (rare 5%).


Epidemiology
• Central and East Asia
• Southeast Asia
• North Africa
• the Middle East
• Central Latin America
• Eastern Europe

It is estimated 2% of people globally are living with hepatitis C.


In Egypt it is estimated that prevalence of HCV is around 4.5% to 6.7%.
Pathophysiology
• Cell-mediated immune mechanism.
• Production of antiviral cytokines by T-lymphocytes certainly
play a role in hepatocytic injury due to HCV.
Diagnosis

Complications

• Cirrhosis.

• Esophageal varices.

• Hepatic encephalopathy.

• Liver failure.

• Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
