Planning an

Ornamental
Garden
There are two types of outdoor
gardening:

1.Ornamental gardening, which includes raising


different plants for decorative purposes.

2. Vegetable gardening, which includes raising


different vegetables, fruits, and other crops.
Kinds of Ornamental Gardens
 
1.Container Garden –
These are ornamental
plants grown in containers
like earthenware dishes,
clay pots, rubber or
plastic boxes, and in
recyclable cans
2. Formal Flower Garden
– This consists of
flowerbeds laid out in
balanced and regular
arrangements. The
edges of the beds are
straight or perfectly
rounded. This is
achieved by pruning (to
cut off) the plants
regularly.
3. Informal Flower
Garden – It consists of
beds of flowers arranged
in casual and irregular
manner. Beds maybe
unevenly curved and each
may have several kinds of
flower in different
heights and shapes.
4. Rock Garden – This is
very popular type of
garden in front of
houses, commercial
buildings, resorts,
hotels, condominiums. It
is a combination of
rocks and plants
arranged to create a
theme or a scenario
5. Water Garden – This
is a body of water,
usually a pool or man-
made pond, in which
plants that live in water
are grown. Some have to
build an artificial pond
which can be expensive.
6. Wild Flower Garden –
This type is made up of
native wild flowers which
can be inexpensive and
easy to grow.
Some Popular Household
Ornamental Plants
1. Begonia – It is a
common name for a
family of perennial
plants, which are mostly
succulent herbs native to
tropical regions
2. Chrysanthemum –
Genus (a class or kind
marked by common
characteristics) of
perennial flowering
plants – annual and
perennial herbaceous
plants of the daisy
family.
3. Carnation – It is a flower
popular for boutonnieres (a
floral decoration, typically a
single flower or bud, worn on
the lapel of a tuxedo or suit
jacket). Each carnation has a
cluster of flowers, which are
pink and green, and have been
cultivated since time of ancient
Greece. Carnation comes in
numerous colors and each color
has a different meaning.
4. Dahlia – Any of
several perennial plants
having tuberous roots
and red, purple, yellow,
or white flowers.
5. Geranium (Genus
Pelargonium) – It is a
perennial plant and
some are cultivated as
house plants especially
the popular pot and
budding plants of the
genus pelargonium.
6. Fern – It is a
green and non-
flowering plant
having creeping or
erect rhizomes
(rootstocks) or an
aerial stem and large
conspicuous (obvious
to the eye) leaves.
7. Gumamela – Any of
various herbs, shrubs,
and trees of the
mallow family having
large showy flowers. A
single bloom can be
over 6 inches (15cm)
wide.
8. Mayana – This is a
tropical plant of the
mint family. This grows
to height of 3 feet
(91cm) and is cultivated
as a house plant.
9. Oregano (Origanum
Vulgare) – Known as
common marjoram, oregano
is a perennial herb of the
mint family native to the
Mediterranean region and
Asia. It is cultivated in the
U.S. for flavouring food
and for its use in toilet
soaps. In the Philippines, it
is a medicinal plant.
10. Sampaguita – Jasmine vines
or shrubs with yellow or white
star-shaped flowers are noted
for their fine scent. It is found
throughout Europe, Asia, and
Africa. Their flowers are
plucked for the oil which is
used in perfumes and are
usually sold as garland in the
Philippines.
