Savoring
• If the source of savoring Is too simple, savoring will dissipate. If its too complex and
requires use of multiple senses, the focus will switch before savoring dissipates.
• The experience of savoring is intense, prolonged and better after experiencing stress.
When you are experiencing stress, there is a physiological tension throughout your body.
This explains why having a shower after tough day is so amazing because it relaxes your
body and mind.
TECHNIQUES FOR SAVORING
• Sharing with others is often contagious because you tend to shift your focus from self to
how others are responding, hence increases ability to become completely absorbed.
• MEMORY BUILDING
• Active memory building is a type of savoring ,discreetly noticing and capturing the most
positive moments of an enjoyable experience that could be shared with others later on.
• It requires forming clear and vivid memories of those positive moments and reminiscing
about them with others.
TECHNIQUES FOR SAVORING (CONTINUED….)
• SELF CONGRATULATION: Telling oneself how long you have waited for this moment
to arrive, feeling proud of having achieved a difficult task etc.
• SENSORY PERCEPTUAL SHARPENING: A type of savoring that focuses on
intensifying pleasure by focusing on one particular aspect of a positive experience,
blocking out others as a way to sharpen one’s senses through concentration)
• Eg. While listening to the music, you close your eyes to bask in the pleasure of music,
While eating your favourite dessert you close your eyes to completely enjoy the taste.
TECHNIQUES OF SAVORING
• COMPARISONS: Comparing your experiences with others, of what you experienced in the
past or with what one imagined the event would be like.
• Upward social eg. I am doing better than him.
• Temporal Comparisons eg. I am doing better than last week.
• Counterfactual. Eg. I could have been worse
• ABSORPTION: A type of savoring of complete mindful immersion without reflecting,
introspecting or making mental associations with other experiences. Its mindful engagement
in present moment.
OTHER TECHNIQUES OF SAVORING
• COUNTING BLESSINGS: Reminding oneself how proud or lucky one is. Point out what
one is grateful for, identify its source and associate gratitude with it.
• KILL JOY THINKING: A type of cognitive style that reduces savoring. Consists of
“Should’s”, particular of depressive thinking or people with low self esteem often engage
in “kill joy” thinking.
