Introduction To Construction Techniques
Construction Techniques
1
Objectives
• To study different methods of construction to successfully achieve the structural design
with recommended specifications.
• To involve the application of scientific and technological principles of planning,
analysis, design and management to construction technology.
The main objective of this course is to make the student aware of the various construction
techniques, practices and the equipment needed for different types of construction
activities. At the end of this course the student shall have a reasonable knowledge about
the various construction procedures for sub to super structure and also the equipment
needed for construction of various types of structures from foundation to super structure.

Planning
Planning is considered as a precondition measures before attending any
development program. Particularly planning is more important in the
following area
• When the fund available are limited
• The total requirement is much higher

Mechanical (Using Machines) and
Manual Construction
• Machines have been introduced to reduce the human efforts, errors and time. Hence, in case of
building construction if we use machineries instead of manual procedures, it will definitely
reduce the job completion time and will enhance the accuracy level.
• If we consider construction of a building, then from excavation to concreting all the activities if
we carry out by machineries will definitely save time, and for bigger quantum of works use of
machinery will also be cost effective.
• For excavation work, if we excavate 120cum manually with 10 labours, then it will take around
4days, whereas with mechanized excavator it will take 2–3hrs only. And, also the mechanized
way will definitely give you atleast 20% cost benefit.
• Similarly, for other major activities like concreting the mechanized way will reduce the
duration, will decrease the problems like voids, poor mixing and other quality issues, and will
definitely give you cost benefit.
