Which among the following is
NOT a polynomial?
What is the polynomial name
of according to the number of
terms?
A. monomial
B. binomial
C. trinomial
D. multinomial
What is the degree of the
polynomial of ?
A. 1
B. 2
C. 3
D. 4
What do you call a polynomial that
has a degree of 2?

A. Binomial
B. Duonomial
C. Quartic
D. Quadratic
How can you say that an algebraic
expression is not a polynomial?
Addition of
Polynomials
In adding and subtracting
polynomials, it is important to
determine like terms.

What are like terms?

Which terms are the “same” or
LIKE TERMS?
LIKE TERMS
are terms 5x, 8y, 9z, 10, x , 12x, 14z, 7, 3x
2 2

that have the 5x and 12x

Combining Terms
To combine Like Terms, just add or subtract the
coefficients; the variables and exponents stay the
same. Do not also forget the sign of the coefficient.
Example: -5x + 9x
THINK: -5 + 9 = 4
Just copy the variable x.
4x

Adding Polynomials
-basically, this is just
combining like terms!
Polynomials can be added in either
vertical or horizontal form.
In horizontal form, use the
In vertical form, align
Associative and
the like terms and add: Commutative Properties to
regroup and combine like
terms.
5x2 + 4x + 1
+ 2x2 + 5x + 2
7x + 9x + 3
2 (5x2 + 4x + 1) + (2x2 + 5x + 2)
= (5x + 2x ) + (4x + 5x) + (1 + 2)
2 2

= 7x2 + 9x + 3
Example:
Add the polynomials.

(4m + 5) + (m – m + 6)
2 2
(4m + 5) + (m – m + 6)
2 2

4m + 5
2 Let’s use the vertical method.
First, write the 1st given polynomial.
m +6 -m
2
Write the addition symbol on the left.
5m +11-m
2
Align the second polynomial with its like
terms.
Combine like terms.
5m -m +11

Add the polynomials.

(10xy + x) + (–3xy + y)
(10xy + x) + (–3xy + y)

10xy + x Let’s use the vertical method.

First, write the 1st given polynomial.
-3xy +y
Write the addition symbol on the left.
7xy +x +y
Align the second polynomial with its like
terms.
Combine like terms.
Rewrite in standard form.
Example:
Add the polynomials.

(6x – 4y) + (3x + 3y – 8x – 2y)

2 2 2
Let’s use the horizontal method.
(6x – 4y) + (3x + 3y – 8x – 2y)
2 2 2

(6x – 4y) + (3x + 3y – 8x – 2y)

2 2 2
