ENVIRONMENTAL

AWARENESS
What is environmental awareness?
 to understand the fragility of our environment and the importance of
its protection
 is the movement that teaches the need for humans to respect and
protect their natural environment
ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS
MOVEMENTS
Throughout the history, different movements have developed to encourage
environmental awareness.
 Early 1800s – the Romanticism movement arose, based on emotion and
mysticism to protect nature and combat science views.
 1800s- Transcendentalism promoted nature by comparing it to sort of
divinity. Poets Emerson and Thoreau expressed this concept in their work.
 1872- Yellowstone was named in the first national park by Ulysses Grant
to preserve the land and its resources.
 1892- John Muir founds the Sierra Club to protect the environment and
combat climate change.
 1900- Theodore Roosevelt championed conversation through multiple
movements.
 1916 – Woodrow Wilson founds the National Park Service.
 1918 – Migratory Bird Treaty Act is created to protect native bird species.
 1955 – Air pollution Control Act proposed to reduce factory emissions.
 1962 – Scientist Rachel Carson publishes Silent Spring to expose the harm
of pesticides to the environment.
 1969 – Santa Barbara oil spill sparked outrage and encouraged action as
multiple animals and birds perished.
 1970 (APRIL) The first Earth Day for activists to demonstrate their will to
save the environment.
 1970 (DECEMBER) – President Nixon establishes the Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) as a governmental agency to address the
environment.
 1972 – Clean Water Act is created to protect pollution of waterways.
 1973 – Endangered Species Act protects endangered species from hunting.
 2016 – President Obama joins Paris Agreement to address climate change.
 2019 – Greta Thunberg proposes Global Climate Strike.
Environmental Awareness Organizations
Different environmental awareness organizations have been established over
time to protect the environment.
 World Wildlife Fund (WWF) – Founded in 1961 to protect wildlife and
their habitats and promote environmental awareness.
 Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) – Founded by president Nixon
in1970 to pool governmental agencies for environmental measures.
 Green New Deal – Proposed by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for plans to
reduce greenhouse gases.
 Sunrise Movement – Founded in 2017, young activist use protests and
their voices to fight climate change and show support for the Green New
Deal.
Global Environmental Awareness
Global environmental awareness offers ways to protect the world’s natural
resources and reduce the destruction of the environment.
Certain behaviors or activities that harm the environment include:
o Plastics – Plastic products do not biodegrade and fill landfills and oceans
worldwide.
o Oil drilling – Utilizes large expanses of land and contributes to gas
emissions.
o Deforestation – The destruction of trees and forest for the logging industry
and paper production.
o Transportation – Utilizing a personal car produces more gas emissions
that harm the air quality.
o Water Waste – Long showers, letting the sink faucet run, and frequent
toilet flushing.
Environmental Awareness
“GO GREEN” going green means being mindful of natural environment
and making economic choices that aren’t harmful to earth. When people “go
green”, they practicing environmental awareness. The term means exactly
what you expect it to: being aware of the natural environment and making
choices that benefit-rather than hurt- the earth.
Human waste production accumulates in the environment and impacts the
solid, wildlife, and water. With the Industrial Revolution, scientific advances
led to the production of greenhouse gases that warm the atmosphere and
cause a gradual increase in temperature also termed the greenhouse effect.
Spreading environmental awareness can preserve our natural resources and
reduce destruction of earth.
As the environment becomes damaged and greenhouse gases accumulate,
the increasing temperature on Earth can lead to progressive changes, such
as:
 Glacial melting from rising temperatures
 Drought with water shortages and increased wildfires
 Rising sea levels with flooding
 Destruction of coral reefs
Increasing allergies and asthma due to air pollutants
Let’s dig deeper and learn more about
environmental awareness

EXAMPLES:
 HOMES
CONSERVING ENERGY AND POWER
PURCHASES, RECYCLING, AND ACTIVISM
WHY IS ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS
IMPORTANT TO US?

 Environmental awareness is essential to demonstrate how

humans can protect and preserve their natural resources.
Educating the population can reduce the use of plastics and water
waste while promoting recycling to reduce landfill waste.
HOW CAN WE PROMOTE
ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS?

 Education of the public can promote environmental awareness

in order to protect natural resources. By demonstrating how
plastic use, water waste, and global warming will impact future
generations, environmental awareness can trigger changes in
behavior.
